Monteleukast being stopped

I had an asthma review today and after 10 years of stabilised asthma using only my Ventolin inhaler and Monteleukast my doctor is going to stop the Monteleukast because she says it works better with a steroid inhaler and therefore should only be taken with a steroid inhaler. I stopped my steroid after advised by a specialist consultant 10 years ago after it was found even the lowest of doses thinned my skin and caused stretch marks (I was part of a long case study). I really don't want to take any medications I really don't need to take. My asthma is perfectly well managed and have not had an attack for years so why do they insist on changing what works and can they really stop the Monteleukast if I refuse to take it with the steroid inhaler?
