Hi all, captured AGAIN pushing towards 20 admissions in <5 months! It ... Is ... Insane.
I have been in since monday, where as normal left it late (later than the norm). Done the whole resus and threatening ICU c**p.
Lungs have needed a lot of stuff to try and get them onside and they are still not playing. Was put on IV aminophylline on weds, but they still aren't really playing ball (keep dropping my sats, going to the loo and coming back too sob to talk - you know the *fun* stuff your lungs do) so my cons yesterday decided to keep me on the aminophylline until Monday where he will review. If I can come off and stay stable for 24 hours I *might* get out Tuesday. I'm just hoping that there will be a degree of stability on discharge. - though at the moment I'd settle for being able to breathe comfortably whilst sat!
The people looking after me are actually amazing though!! Definitely makes admissions more bearable.
Any ideas to keep me from going insane over the next 4 days? Not even allowed off the ward
Aww Laurs that is rubbish....i too am captured and had the whole ICU crap also!
Does the hosp ur in have wifi at all? I find its cheaper than patientline and faarr more entertaining.
If in doubt sleep...this is my plan of action to get through the next few days lol
I know its super crap when ur stuck on the ward and cant leave (i think being told u cant leave makes it worse even if ur lungs wouldnt allow it anyway)
Sending big hugs and i really hope they mamage to get some control for you soon!

Ahh no Becca, sorry you're in I've not been in ICU, though there were noises a few times earlier on in this admission where that was the next step. Fortunately I *think* the aminophylline is now keeping the serious stuff at bay even if I am still annoyingly symptomatic and really struggling after the minorest of things!
No wifi unfortunately and my lungs play up when I try to sleep!
Like you i have never been to ITU although have been close a few times but this time was by far the closest as i was b2b nebs for 6 hrs had all the iv mag, hydro and amino and i could still be heard wheezing outside the ward
The medical reg was super nice tho and never left me and i had a total 3 ICU reviews the 1st night n then a few more the next day
Ive been in since wednesday and i have thankfully seemed to bounce back quite quickly...although im struggling to make it to 4hrly nebs today.
Aww no internet thats rubbish...yeah i get the not able to sleep stuff to, im lucky that generally if im upright i can get a snooze.
I reckon ill be here till Monday anyhoo...i dont mind too much if it means that i can stay out of the place for a bit!
Xxx
Agh no that sucks!! I've been to HDU a fair few times, come close too often to ITU - had CPAP but fortunately never been properly ventilated!
My lungs don't seem to be playing ball today as had a reg review and while yesterday I had a wheeze going off today my lungs are ""far too quiet"" ... soo b2bs and see how it goes. If things don't seem to be improving ABGs and take it from there. I'm not ITU bad, just uncomfortable and stuff!!
Im off the amino, for now but just had neb and struggling again but im hoping it will just settle down!
I hate ABGs soo much my wrists are still sore from the other day in fact my cons was like they should have just put in an arterial line to save me from the constant stabbing.
Dear Laurs Lungs,
please would you both be so kind as to give it a rest...if not we may be forced to dig out a returns form and send you back for a replacement pair who will behave!
Ta muchly!
There now if u could pass the msg onto stroppy lungs i would be grateful lol.
I hope u feel a bit better soon, big huggs Xxx
Ahh I really hope things settle down for you!! And that you manage to stop off the amino and that you get out more stable on Monday
Returning the stern words to your lungs!!!
The reg and F1 aren't happy with my lungs today the rate of amino had been lowered because I am tachy (I think it's more from the nebs and struggling), but it's going up. Sats aren't great which means they have done another ABG which shows pretty crap numbers despite O2. Soo more nebs and yet more mag - never needed mag at the same time as aminophylline. And putting the rate of the amino back up after another ECG.
Dunno why my lungs are deciding to mess with me quite as much as they are at the min! Don't usually get this bad!! Or take as long to bounce back! Really feeling fed up with them!
Yeah they r quite cautious when it comes to amino and hr, i always end up with a series of ECGs cos im tachy...but im tachy most of the time anyhoo, i think cos im struggling tbh!
Im quite surprised at the amount of mag youve had...they tend to try and not give me a second lot never mind anymore than that because they r worried about hypermagnesia, so its quite interesting.
Im currently awaiting review from doc as had 3 nebs and still wheezy n struggling
I know the feeling i usually bounce back super quick and dont need to step up on the treatment after the initial attack but im struggling this time. Its just so fustrating!

Sames to you, feel better soon

The most mag I've ever had has been 3 lots up until this admission. Had it in A&E Monday night, rebounded at about the 6-7 hour point, had another lot, really kicked off again Tuesday night, so had more and then weds morning and yet more. Which is when they started the aminophylline - so this is my 4th day not 5th. But will have been 6 days by the time I'm off the stuff. Just waiting to see what my levels of amino are then the flow rate is being increased. Think they have gone down the mg route now though as my lungs have gone from wheezy this morning to silent now.
Never had magnesium and aminophylline at the same time before though!! I am hoping that it settles my lungs down so I can sleep for a bit as I'm exhausted now!
What has the reg said about you? How long have you been off the aminophylline? Think perhaps you're gonna need to go back onto it?
There seems to be a lot of us having a hard time at the minute! xxxx
Well now it all went a bit pearshaped there for a bit; but had more nebs, ABG, mag on the go and iv Amino to be restarted n some good ol O2....sigh
Im quite fed up of struggling now to be honest!
I hope ur feeling a bit better now xx
I have had IV mag and aminophylline at the same time, but only ever in ITU because of the risk of arrithmyia...I have also had repeated doses of IV mag but only again when in ITU
Oh no Becca hope things are more stable now!! You feeling better?
Honey - I've never had as much mag during an admission as this time! When being given mag and aminophylline I was on monitoring equipment and being watched closely!! But fortunately stopped where I was with no movement to ICU I don't like ICU!
Today seems more settled still on 4 hourly salbutamol/atrovent nebs plus PRN salbutamol, which is now lasting about 2 hours so only using 1 extra generally between my 4 hourly ones and the amount of aminophylline has been increased so I think I might be at therapeutic levels, which I think is helping to calm my lungs down!!
Also my sats are playing ball a bit more still needing mostly 2L to keep above 92% but it's definitely better than it was don't think I will be taken off IVs tomorrow though, so I don't think I'm going to be discharged on Tuesday, telling myself it will be weds then any time before then is a bonus
