Hiy, do any onf you suffer from recurring pneumonia?? Have had it for the past 3 years once yearly, last bout was only 6 months ago. I'm due to fly to Florida in 4 weeks. Just wondering if anyone on here has this problem and is this caused by the Asthma????

Hi Vicky, yes, I have had, and still do get, recurrent pneumonia. Have you been checked for gastro-oesophageal reflux disease? Mine is caused by reflux - they discovered that when I slept, stomach contents were refluxing and entering my lungs, causing the pneumonia. I now have to sleep more or less upright, and had to get an electric bed to ensure I stay in the correct position all night. Just one night of not doing this can cause me to get pneumonia again. Reflux can also really exacerbate asthma symptoms.

Hiya, no havent been tested, may ask if this doesnt clear up after antibiotics have finished. I thought having the Pneumonia jab at xmas would have stopped it. Only just found out now it only covers some....New to this Asthma as was only diagnosed last summer. Have been fine since Sept.

Thanks XX

Hiya, pneumonia jab wont make any difference if you are getting infection as a result of aspirating stomach contents. I had the pneumonia jab after the first bout of pneumonia - I had it five or six times before they figured out why (at specialist hospital). Stomach contents are also very acidic and damaging to the lungs. Do you see a respiratory consultant? I have had two tests for this - oesophageal manometry, and oesophageal ph monitoring for 24hrs.

I take a high dose proton pump inhibitor (omeprazole) and a high dose of domperidone, which empties the stomach faster. But neither of these prevent reflux, they just reduce the harm caused by it. Omeprazole reduces the amount of acid produced by the stomach, so the stomach contents hopefully cause less damage to the lungs if aspirated.

hope that helps

If it is that then it makes sense as i've been complaining of indegestion the last couple of weeks. Will defo talk to doc next week if not cleared up. Thanks. XXXXXXXXXXX
