Sounds like it could be acid reflux. When does it happen? Is it after you eat? Some more details please would help us help you

It could be post nasal drip from excess nasal mucus, but acid reflux could also be a possibility, both not uncommon in asthmatics. Your GP or asthma nurse can have a look and prescribe something suitable for either condition. I have to watch what I eat or I become a mucus monster, but we're all different and just working out what can trigger these symptoms is your very own detective project.

I have post nasal drip too and I use a steriod nasal spray to control it. I agree with Poobah and think it would be good for you to make an appointment with your doctors to find out what is causing nasal mucus.

Neil Med nasal rinse was recommended by my chest physio. You have to keep doing it and the sinuses and nasal passages are many and convoluted so it takes time to get through. Also Speech and Language advised drinking water constantly throughout the day and night to water it down and make it thinner so it moves more easily. This is on top of your usual drinks. Physio also prescribed steam inhalation to loosen it. If it isn’t a trigger that is. Three times a day. There are also breathing exercises that help shift it and speech and language advised humming as this vibrates the airways.

Hi I have found that cutting out most dairy has made a massive difference for me i know this won’t work for everyone but could be worth a try. I was finding my cough and mucus literally debilitating. I cut most dairy out about 5 weeks ago and it has been life changing.

ah ok sorry I couldn’t be any help x I was recently started on carbocisteine which makes the mucus thinner so easier to clear. I think a lot of mine is being caused by reflux

If you're plant based, check out the amount if omega 6 you're consuming and your corresponding omega 3 consumption. O6 can cause inflammation and that leads to excess mucus, some asthmatics are sensitive to O6. Foods high in O6 are soya, palm oil, plant based oils, chickpeas, avocado, tofu, nuts etc.

I had the same problem, trying to clear muck all the time, tried Omeprazole for a week which worked so presumed it was from acid reflux as had waterbrash as well. I propped up more in bed (sofa) that helps too now very little problem with it. You do need to know cause though- I’ve taken to self treat mostly these days, after Googling it first on NHS site which is what doc will tell you, but tests preferably to be sure. Good luck & Merry mucus Xmas! 🧑‍🎄

I found Symbicort increased my sinus mucous:; I now use Breo and it’s much better. I sleep with an air cleaner in my room , wash sheets/ blankets every week and, in winter, use a hot humidifier with distilled water. I also use NcNeil sinus rinse- with distilled water. I am much better. Seldom need guafenisen (Mucinex).

I would like to know too! It does feel like it’s coming from the back of the nose, dripping onto the esophagus and tongue. Although it also feels like it’s all in through the bronchi. i’ve been experimenting for a couple years with different remedies; now I’m suspecting that it is digestive stress that is causing it, because proteins are sticky. Now I’m working with pre-biotics, and that seems to be working! Pre-biotics supply the enzymes you need to digest sticky proteins. As we get older, we produce less of the enzymes we need to process proteins. The enzymes are called proteases. Anyway give it a try. Pre- biotics. I have zero phlegm today! I’ve been taking two pre-biotics a day.

It could be bronchiectasis, as it is in my case, though nasal drip and GERD can exacerbate it. For those who have been diagnosed, carbocysteine or montelucast can be prescribed, but I find N-acetyl cysteine works to some extent and is available from health shops
