Hi, I've just found this website after googling.

My son is 2yrs 4mths and has fairly bad asthma. We are in the early stages of diagnoses but its been a hard battle.

Henry takes a puff of Clenil Modulite morning and night and 2 puffs of Ventalin morning and night. He's recently been started on Singulair as well (1 tablet at bedtime) he's been on singulair for a month but has ended up on a 5 day steroid course again. It's the 3rd lot of steroids since Christmas.

What are we doing wrong. Why is he ending up on steroids so often. He had 5 or 6 courses last year as well.

Do I need my doctor to refer us?

Help us please.

Thanks claire. X

Hi

From what you have said personally I would ask for a referral to a specialist. I don't think you are necessarily doing anything wrong but a specialist will be able to look into why things aren't going so well with your sons asthma. He may suggest allergy testing to check there is no link there.

Just out of interest does your son take a tablet? My son has the powder sachets..

It is daunting the process of being diagnosed and from my experience it doesn't always get easier from there. But with my sons consultant I do feel much more reassured that they will get to the bottom of things. We also get to see a specialist respiratory nurse when we see the consultant and she is amazing she has given us so much advice on best method of using inhaler, cleaning spacer and much more.

Hi Claire, it sounds like your sons asthma is not controlled if he is needing so many oral steroids. Im surprised that given his situation, he hasnt been referred to a paediatrician/respiratory specialist.

Please be reassurred this isn't about you doing anything wrong, if you are doing everything you are being asked to - why not give Asthma UK a ring for a chat (number at top of page in red), or ask your GP for a referral?

I hope things improve for Henry and you

Lynda :)

Hi Jenny and Lynda,

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I've had a hellish 2 days with Henry's cough so today we are back to the gp. I will be asking for a referral and I'm also going to ring asthma uk.

He's just finished the 5 day course of steroids and is no better so I'll be demanding answers.

Jenny, Henry takes Singulair as a tablet, my gp felt that as he was able to chew sweeties (!) he'd be fine with the tablet. She said if we struggled he could have powder but he seems ok at taking it so far.

Thanks and I'll keep you updated.

How did it go at the GP?

My son probably should have the tablets, he's just turned 3 but tbh we are having enough trouble giving him one of his inhaler so maybe I will wait before changing that.

Hi Jenny,

Sorry for the delay in replying. I've been ill.

The doctor gave us 3 more days of steroids and antibiotics for a week. He said that in his opinion the front lung function wasn't as he'd expect and that his breathing was too fast. He is willing to refer us but as Sngulair takes a while to start working effectively he'd rather give it another few weeks and take it from there. We are seeing him again tomorrow so hopefully I'll know more.

Henry is much better so maybe things are working.
