Do Anthistomine's help?

Child is on Flixitide and Ventolin daily but we have never taken any anthistomine (cant spell this word!) although she does have some allergies (mainly cats) my question is

Does taking them relieve the asthma symptoms or help in any way or is it just another drug to add to the list?

Hi Ozzie girl,

I use antihistamines all year round for my asthma and they make a huge difference. If i accidentally forget to take it, i need more puffs of my reliever or else my reliever only partly works. Definitely worth a try. I also had to try different types as they don't all have the same benefit for me. i currently take loratadine, which has proven to be the most effective.

Hi Ozzie Girl, Antihistimine is taken for allergies. Allergies, asthma, hayfever, eczema and rhinitis are all tied in - my son takes antihistimines to treat his rhinitis and this in turn has helped his asthma. I have just been prescribed an antihistimane as part of treatment for my eczema. Certainly an antihistamine will help your child if she has an allergic reaction to cats (you mention these). The only problem I have is that all antihistamines make me drowsy (even the non-drowsy ones) and this can be a nuisance. You would have to be guided by your doctor which is the best one for your daughter, but as JF says sometimes it is a matter of trying the different ones to see which suits best.

There is some useful information on the subject in All About Asthma, the lime green band running across the top of this page.

thanks for replying

thanks for the info, its an avenue we haven't gone down yet, but im certainly keen to try this, are the ones that asthmatics use on prescription only or over the counter?

There are different ones, some over the counter, some prescription only. My son has Piriton (over the counter, very effective but can make you very tired although doesnt seem to affect my son) and Neoclarityn (prescription). To be honest I dont really know what the difference is between all the antihistamines. Some are for over 12s only. You are best checking with your doctor or pharmacist which is suitable for your daughter.

Hello they certainly helped me but made me feel so drowsy ( even the so-called non-drowsy ones ) to the

point my driving was affected so I stopped them. As long as your daughter doesn`t drive or operate dangerous machinery should be ok. AntihistAmine, we know what you meant. Best wishes
