My 5 year old recently ended up in hospital with what drs thought was a asthma attack, since then we have been treating him as asthmatic (yet to actually see anyone other than our GP), currently he has a bad cold and is.very mucosy and coughing alot (not covid) how can I help ease his symptoms, it's worse at night, he has 2 pillows his room isn't too hat or cold, he's had both his Clenil (2 puffs) and salbutamol (2 puffs). I'm terrified of him having an attack while I'm asleep. Any advice welcome, I will be arranging a GP appointment 1st thing Monday.

Hi. I have had many similar experiences with my asthmatic son who is now 7. Ever since then I started sleeping with him in the same room when he shows sign of a cold.

If you are worried and you believe he has had an asthma attack you could call 111 for advice over the weekend. From my experience it sounds like a chest infection. Hope he feels better soon

I was just about to suggest that mom sleep with her little one so she can be closer and hear him if he starts coughing.

Make sure there is some air in the room and it isn’t too dry - you can put a wet towel on the radiator if it is. Get him to sleep sitting up on lots of pillows and support him so he doesn’t fall sideways. Having a drink of water might help and lots of calming things - lights, music, whatever helps him and you. I am sure he will get better soon.

Thank you I will try these, just been to see our GP and he said it's common for kids to have really rubbish technique when using their inhalers, which surprised me as surely it's beneficial to make sure that they are getting the most out of it, so that they don't get ill.

If you have aerosol inhalers the doctor can prescribe a spacer device so that technique isn't going to be crucial and delivery of a full dose is more likely. Apologies if you already have one. youtu.be/KNzMdBSpB0A

Just wondering how you managed this and how long it lasted? Is he better now? . My son had covid during first week of January. Very mild thank god. No cough . Then school started and it was so cold and he catched sort of a cold and started having coughin fits today. He has not been diagnosed with asthma yet, but had several hospital episodes where they gave us blue inhalers that made him well. I have him his blue inhaler today but it did not seem to help much. Hospital always gave him 10 puffs every 4 hours. I started with 2 puffs, after 4 hr I gave 4 puffs as they did not help. And after 4 hr I gave 10 puffs as they did not help before. After the last dose he got slightly better. Can an asthma attack be only coughing? He doesn't have a wheeze this time. Worried about the night.
