can't breathe out?

just wondered if anyone else gets this? Sometimes i find i can breathe in fine but have difficulty breathing out, like i've got to force the air out and can't empty my lungs so they feel full of air all the time. I don't have my usual asthma symptoms when i experience this. Does anyone else get this? Is there anything i can do to stop it?

Hi september,

it sounds like your asthma, are you getting other symptoms with it? its where the airways are narrowing and not allowing air in or out of the lungs. So you have a ""dead space"" in the lungs which can also cause some rib aching/pain. I do have this when i get breathless, and then the chest tightening starts and usually ,i get a brief time where i cant breathe in or out and i get the chest ache/rib pain. I think this is quite common, but of course i cant speak for everyone else as each persons asthma is different. I hope this helps

Sounds like exactly what happens to me. Actually, what's happening to me right now. With no inhaler 😥

Hey,

If I were you I would take your rescue inhaler when you feel this and see if it helps. I know that's pretty obvious, but sometimes when I'm second guessing myself I know that ""doing an experiment"" like that helps me see if it's asthma or not. When I get symptoms, I get tight chested and feel like I can't breath in all the way, because it hurts too much. But I also get a weird wheeze thing happening when I breath out. I find that I get the wheezing breathing out first, and then the chest pain/not feeling good at all thing if it keeps going.

I've heard though that the asthma actually is supposed to make it harder to breath out when you're having an attack (at least on the technical medical side) than to breath in, at least generally, so I think that makes a lot of sense!

hi-this is what i was told was the beginning of an attack and only happens in asthmatics-when you can get your breath in but not out so that you feel like you are gunna explode...i get this a lot to be honest and the only thing that helps is lots of inhalers or a neb...hope you feel better x

Dificulty breathing out is one of the basic classic symptoms of asthma.

Really didnt know that...man i must be stupid. Maybe i should read up some more

if you are having difficulty breathing out either with or without other sypmtoms and you cant speak in sentances then please seek medical help.

So glad its not just me then!! Never really linked it to my asthma as I generally don't have any other symptoms at the time. Will try my blue inhaler next time it happens and see if it helps.

ah ha, have found the not being able to breathe out, does come before the elephant on my chest and sob. And the ventolin does stop it being quite as bad. Thanks all for your replies

So glad we can do a search on previous posts. This is what I am having these last few days. Feel like I have too much air so cant get any more in there. Cannot seem to breathe it all out. Blue inhaler getting used a lot. Told my asthma nurse but it seemed to go in one ear and straight back out the other. :(

After reading the posts here, feel a whole lot happier and not alone.

grannymo,

hope you feel better soon and get help if feel worse ,

Hi Grannymo.

Sounds like your cloak of invisibility is working overtime (either that or your nurse has galloping IKE).

For me, the best thing about finding this forum was the realisation that symptoms that were considered to be trivial, ridiculous or (worse) imaginary by my GP were issues for other people too, which shows that either I'm not nuts or, if I am nuts, I'm nuts in very good company (does that make sense?)- I'm happy with either.

Hope you're feelilng better now.

xx

Thanks. Feeling better after several puffs of salbutamol through spacer. Going out tonight with friends including the one who doesnt understand asthma. Might have to hit him over the head with the spacer. LOL

It's been interesting reading this string of messages. My main symptom at the first sign of an attack is problems breathing out and now i know why!!

And knowing why helps to adjust and manage symptoms better. So thanks everyone.
