Hi I had asthma when i was a child but hadn't had any problems for approx. 20 years. I've always been prone to chest infections but over the last year or so they were getting worse and more often. Up until about 6 weeks ago my doctor hadn't mentioned anything about my asthma returning but now they are convinced it is back...........i'm not so sure. I don't really remember much of my asthma when i was a child but it certainly didn't feel like this. I am constantly coughing and have have stabbing pains in my back near my shoulder blades. I haven't had any wheezing well not that i've noticed.
Things got worse about 2 weeks ago. I had been coughing so much that i was in agony with the pain. They said it was down to muscular problems with the coughing. That was fine but then i was in so much pain i found it very difficult to move, swallow, eat or drink. I was totally exhausted. Ended up being off work 2weeks which isn't good.
First i was told that my asthma was out of control then i was told i had inflamation of my windpipe thats why it was sore swallowing then they said i had reflux. I was given painkillers which i ended up being allergic and kept throwing up to so was told just to stick to paracetemol then i was given lanoprazole for the reflux which caused diahorrea. I was already very dehydrated and still my doctor wasn't helping. I got my asthma inhalers changed the day i got blood tests and a chest x ray. The results all came back normal. but i'm still very uncomfortable, still coughing and still have the pains in my back. My doctor doesn't seem very concerned or interested to be honest and now i feel like a paranoid freak thats wasting everyones time.
Does anyone have any similiar problems or advice or am i right and i am a paranoid freak??? Sorry its such a long moaning post just really fed up and not sure whats going on.
After many years of being told I had reflux or post nasal drip or rhinitis, it was down to NHS 24 doc this year. who raised the first questioning of asthma.
My GP the week before had suggested I gargle with aspirin or breathed in over a bowl of hot water & menthol to relieve the cough. When he actually thought about it after my trip to NHS 24 doc, agreed to send me for asthma testing.
Is there another GP in the practice you could see instead? Or perhaps the practice nurse?
Best wishes, let us know how you get on,
GM xx
I've been attending the asthma clinic in my doctors surgery. Its run by one of the nurses. She's been great. She was the one that changed my inhalers as she thought that would help. It has helped but not got rid of everything. This is my 3rd day back at work and I'm totally exhausted and still coughing loads and sore.

Takes a bit of time for the cough to settle down. I wondered too, if it was all going to work. Spent a bit of time going Huh! and Yeah Right! and generally feeling sorry for myself. If you look back my posts, you'll see I was a bit down with it all.
It does get easier though. I'd make a follow up appointment with the asthma nurse in about a fortnight. That's what I'm doing at the moment.
I learned from the guys on here that yes, it does take a wee bit of time to sort out what meds are best and in what quantities.
Keep us posted, ashm.
Hugsies,

Thanks GrannyMo. Your posts has made me feel a bit better about it all. I am due at the asthma nurse in about 4 weeks so I will see how it goes until then. I’ll be glad when my cough does eventually settle down. I’ve been reading you posts and its good to see there will hopefully be light at the end of the tunnel.
