New to asthma

What a great website. I have just been diagnosed this week with asthma. At first have to admit panic sort of set in, but asthma nurse very calm and informative and explained everything. I have two inhalers seretide and salamol. Obviously all new to me so would appreciate any experiences and advice. Thank you. Debbie

Me too!

Hi. I was suspected a month ago and got diagnosed on Monday! If you want something to read get booklets from this website. Very informative and straight forward! I'm finding cold air is not good, but 'Buffs' (available from outdoor shops) are good to keep wrapped up! I always make sure I put my hand on my blue inhaler before I leave just to make sure I know where it is!

Feel free to message me if you want! Hope you get it sorted!

Hello Debbie welcome, sound perfectly natural response to panic when first diagnosed! Most people once they have got their head around it, and have it all under control carry on with their lives as normal. Hope the current snowy conditions aren't having too much impact on you, Asthma and cold air can be a tad uncomfortable, so keep blue inhaler to hand and as someone else as recommended keep your mouth covered if air very cold as this does help too. Hope your Asthma improves now you have been diagnosed and carry on with life as normal.

Thank you for the welcome. Totally agree with the cold weather issue, I walked to the shop today, by the time I got home had tight chest and was literally struggling for air, had my reliever when I got in and had an immediate effect, but made me quite scared at the time. Guess I need to get into the habit of taking the little blue thing with me all the time!! Had a bit of a weepy moment, but okay now, guess I just need to learn to cope and adjust to it all.

Hi Debbie!

How are things going? Are you getting things in control? I'm glad the snow has gone finally!

Hi, yes thank you things much better. Weather much better and has had a positive effect on my symptoms. Had a strange 'do' today, been a bit on and off all day, really tight chest...can only describle as feeling like a concrete slab on my chest, blue inhaler seems to ease it, but seems to return a few hour later? Is that normal? Obviously just getting used what is 'normal' and what is a warning sign. Seems worse when I breathe in.

Hi Debbie

I'm new to this as well and still learning what triggers it and what can be an attack. I would say contact NHS direct at any time. Remember it better to seek advice early rather than later! Nobody will mind.

Hope that helps.
