Reliever Inhalers

Some of my friends use a Bricanyl turbohaler and some of my others have ventolin. I personally have ventolin but don't like it? What is the difference and why do the have a different reliever to me?

They are both short acting relievers but contain different active ingredients. Ventolin gives me a splitting headache and doesn't help my asthma, bricanyl works fine with no side effects. It's a question of finding what works for each person. If you're not getting on with ventolin ask your GP if you can try bricanyl instead.

Bricanyl also lasts slightly longer than ventolin, im allergic to ventlin causes severe broncospasm so i have to use bricanyl. its worth mentioning to your gp some people i know prefer bricanyl but for other the side effects are worse than ventoin its all down too how your body copes or reacts.

i've been on ventolin for a year and a half, it's just that on the odd occaision i get a bit of cramp and a bit shaky...not sure if it would look abit odd if i went to the gp and asked to switch after so long??? What do you think!

Thats the generall side effects off a broncodilator in general so you would probably get the same with bricanyl.

hi im new to the forum, but had to reply, ive had all sorts of different inhalers including brycanal which which made me shake to the point i couldnt hold a cup ive also had spiriva fo a while didnt work,iv recently moved home so have signed with a new gp and asthma nurse the nurse has now taken me off all that i had and given me ventolin and serotide with an arochamber to see if this will help any,any advice would be gratfuly accepted as to inhalers being changed almost on a yearly basis thanks anne

I also have problems with Ventolin. I know I'm meant to take it even if I have mild problems but it makes me feel so bad (weak, too shaky to hold a drink, loss of balance, scrambled brain) that I only use it if I absolutely have to. I can struggle on with the asthma if it's just at the pain & slight struggle for breath stage but I can do nothing if I have to use my inhaler. My doctor's solution was for me to sit down when I take it (to stop me from falling over!)!

Do people think it's worth pestering to try Bricanyl?

I used to get very shaky if i took ventolin on an empty stomach. I seemed to have got used to it now and don't shake at all or only very slight if i take a lot. However salbutamol nebulisers are very different and I shake all over - but then that could just as easily be the allergic reaction that I have just had hence needing the nebuliser in the first place.

i also got the shakes quite bad...but ventolin made me feel faint (actually fainted once afta takin it) and i get a splittin headache...im now on bricanyl and salbutamol (as a very very last resort)...it might be worth tryin 2 get it changed to bricanyl...remember the worst they can say is no!
