This week i have been having Patch tests to find out if something has been upsetting my lichenscherosis and low and behold i have an allergy to Sodium Metabisulphite. It is in a lot of creams i have been given and found they didnt work no wonder.
Does anyone else have this allergy? Or any tips on this specific allergy?
I am in a similiar sort of position I suspect that I have the same allergy and it has been affecting my asthma. I am waiting for an appointment with an allergist to get tested. I find it hard to know what I react to half the time as I am allergic to a growing list of things and have to carry epi-pens.
In the mean-time I am avoiding sodium metasulphite in the hope that it helps and I get a break through with my asthma, which I think will be a tall order...
You're going to have to give up the home-brew then
More seriously, it's a tricky one because it's used as a preservative in lots of things, especially the more tasty things... It's number in foods (like squash) is E223. Be very careful, because it's also used in some OTC medicines, including generic (and supermarket own brand) paracetamol, so you may be taking it without realising and may need to look for an alternative.
Hi plumie
I have a problem with sodium metabisulpite too - If I accidently drink/eat something with the stuff in my lungs start itching and burning and then the cough kicks in ...not pleasant and can be very severe if the sulphate content is high.
Unfortunately its just a question of checking the lablels - the most likely candidates are fruit squashes, even some supposidly 'pure' juices can have the stuff lurking, wines some sausages - the list is quite extensive!!
I've had it since I was very young and it's annoying but its just a question of being careful - if you do accidently indulge I find a quick puff of ventolin usually sorts it out!
I have known that I react to sodium metabisulphite for about 30 years. As the previous poster said it is hidden in so many products that it is important to check labels. I reacted to wine too which doesn't state on the label that it is included but it does now state when sulphites or sulphates are present so you may need to watch out for any foods/drinks containing any sulphites.
HiI've just had patch test results today and am allergy to sod. Metabisulphate. I had already established I had a sulphite sensitivity (food, E220-228) and have hives, eczema, asthma and almost immediate digestive respinses to them. It's been suggested by my dermatologist to have a medialert bracelet as it's ised in anaesthetics and adrenaline products, and so if I was in an accident or had a a severe reaction to anything I'm allergic to (also linalool and fragrance) they'd need to know. I was given a simple guidance sheet from British society for cutaneous allergy, which may be available online, for sodium metabisulfite. I'm currently finding more info myself, being only 4 hours in myself. Good luck!
