NSAID alternatives

Hello guys, just thought I'd pick your brains. NSAIDs set off my asthma, but I find that paracaetamol doesn't really deal with muscle pain very well. Does anyone know of any alternatives I could take that don't fall under the NSAID class? Preferably over the counter, but prescribed if otherwise...

Hi - I also have this problem, and as I'm also allergic to other pain meds, the only option I have is paracetamol and to be honest, chocolate works better..

There are different types of NSAID called Cox - 1 and Cox 2 - don't ask me what all that means, my consultant rambled on for ages and I did the nod and smile routine - I'm glad he involves me, but I wish he would speak English rather than medical because I'm often totally overwhelmed by what he goes on about.

Anyway, he prescribed me celacoxib which he said should be okay with an NSAID allergy, but unfortunately I also had a reaction to that... *rolls eyes*. Today he mentioned some other type I could have, but I can't remember the name.

It is really really difficult and you have all my sympathies because it's so hard not being able to take the common painkillers and having to live with pain. I'm really struggling at the moment. I can take tramadol but have massive side-effects with it, though sometimes the GP has resorted to this. I'm sure you've tried all the other stuff - hot water bottle etc - it really upsets me when the GP suggests stuff like this because I know it doesn't help much (though saying that I'm sat with a hot water bottle typing this!).

Sorry, that's probably not much help!!

Hahahaha I know the feeling when cons try to explain things...nodding and smiling is a good tactic. Think you'd actually have to be some kind of medical professor to understand him.

Hmm I might try and ask my cons/GP. Hot water bottles don't really cut it when it's muscular pain in your shoulder... although, having said that, I do have one essentially glued to me.

Thanks, Ratty. Hopefully, at some point, pain free without breathing problems will be coming our way. :D

Hi Bookworm

I could write a book about shoulder pain, after an accident 7 yrs ago when I snapped the tendon in my elbow I had to keep my arm constantly in a sling for 18 months before surgery, and now I am left in constant agony in my shoulder and neck from it being set in one place for so long, I have tried everything, physio (which I have had weekly for 7 yrs!), accupuncture, hypnosis, homeopathy, etc etc..

I find Tramadol works for me, but try to limit the amount as very addictive, have a heat oack that wraps around my shoulder and a tens machine, they all seem to have a small affect but still seeking that long term solution!

Also cant take NSAID as allergic to codiene and asprin, so with you there!

Snowy

hmmmm.... i am defo with everone else on this!!

pain has been a big issue lately :(

nsaid allergy also,

1. okay with codeine ? but be careful cos of resp affects can get over counter or witrh script depending on stength...
