Easter & Chocolate!

Hi

Does anyone else find that when they eat chocolate it makes them cough? I coughed so much last week after eating a magnum ice cream I was actually sick! It's so unfair & a waste of chocolate!

Does anyone else have this problem or is it just me?

It's so unfair because chocolate is the best!

Certain foods, additives, or preservatives have been found to exacerbate asthma in a small number of cases. And for a very few asthmatics, food can lead to serious asthma attacks.

Asthmatics are usually allergic to only one food, or at most two or three foods. It's a common misconception that people are sensitive or allergic to a wide variety of foods.

If you can identify the specific food or additive, that triggers your asthma symptoms, the best treatment is simply to avoid it.

Asthmatic reactions to food can vary widely. Both whole and processed foods can cause asthmatic reactions. Foods themselves, the chemicals that have been added to them, and individual susceptibility all play a role in determining whether or not you will experience a reaction to a certain food. Even the time of year may play a part. For example, when you're suffering a seasonal allergy such as hay fever, you may be extra sensitive to foods that are not ordinarily a problem for you.

It is widely documented that several common foods tend to be linked with asthma symptoms. Milk, yoghurt and ice-cream or other dairy products are particularly likely to cause coughing or wheezing in asthmatics. Processed foods, eggs, shrimp, fish, citrus fruits, soy, and wheat are other common food associated with asthma. Nuts and peanuts in particular have been known to cause serious, even fatal attacks in people with asthma.

preservatives, flavours and colours added to foods listed below are also often reported to contribute to worsening symptoms.

Tartrazine (E102) is a yellow food colouring made from coal tar which is found in both foods and medications. Approximately half the people who are allergic to aspirin are allergic to Tartrazine. It is sometimes found in baked goods, cake mixes, candy, potato chips, pudding, soft drinks, and many other processed foods.

Monosodium glutamate (E261) or MSG is a flavour enhancer frequently found in Chinese food, packaged soups and potato chips. A small group of asthmatics have severe reactions to MSG.

Sulphites and sulphur dioxide (E220, 221, 222, 226, 227) are often found in canned foods or drinks, soft drinks, wine, beer, dried fruit, packaged soups, and pickled vegetables. Because the foods are of such a wide variety, sulphites and sulphur dioxide can be a constant source of asthma if you are triggered by these substances.

Benzoic acid (E210) is a preservative related to aspirin that can cause problems in susceptible asthmatics.

Aspirin and salicylates may occur naturally in certain foods such as chocolate, mushrooms and yeast extracts. They may be associated with other conditions such as mouth ulcers, tiredness and bowel disorders.

Yeap I'm the smae. I have jsut changed my milk products to soya which is OK as I have to buy soya products for my daughter anyway as she is highly allergic to milk and this si something I have done in the past week and my asthma is so much better. Me and my daughter shared a dairy free easter egg today and it was so lovely. Tesco's do a dairy free chocolate bar which has rice-krispeis in and believe or not it tastes just like normal chocolate. Give it try and see if it helps it could be that the lactos in milk produts is your trigger. This is what I have come to the comclusion off and I will be menation it to my doctor. I am going to restart dairy again just to see if it is being on a dairyfree diet or if it is the new inhaler that has helped in the past week

any dairy product makes me have lots of thick mucus and makes me cough so i have rice and soya instead, but sometimes i cant resist chcoclate!!! lol xxx

I'm really loving Easter this year. Pre asthma diagnosed, I coughed and coughed on the least bit of chocolate. Preventer inhaler must be doing something right, cos today I'm ok. Taking it slowly just in case, though.

Happy Easter to one and all.

Hi I only eat small amounts as I find chocolate hard to swallow so messes up my breathing. I remember have a severe lung infection when i was 17 and had 15 Easter eggs sat in my cupboard for 3 months, remember opening the cupboard just to get the smell. It was torture, I couldn't eat any chocolate then as it stopped me breathing.I remember thinking if I don't get better they will go out of date!Diet coke I find is evil for my asthma, won't go near it now.

Thats good to know it's not just me, I may try cutting out dairy for a week to see if it helps....best finish off my easter eggs first!

Correction. Feel decidedly fluttery today. Husband gave me last Cadbury's mini roll to cheer

me up and ugh! felt decidedly wobbly and starting to get that choking feeling like building dust gives me. Someone else can finish my eggs.

Edit: corrected mispelt word and added a bit.

Second edit: correct my grammar.

just if anyone interested asda and tesco and sainsburys do lactose free milk and cheese as i find i can't tolerate the lactose in stuff but was told that soya doesn't make nice hot choc and wasn't about to give that up as its only milk i do drink but as said am fine with laco free stuff
