I know exactly how you’re feeling. I’m completely miserable with it too. It’s a dreadful thing to have. I’ve had 6 admissions in the last year and fight really hard to stay out of hospital. Don’t think people realise how bad asthma is and how much it controls our quality of life and emotions. I hope you get well soon xx
It's good to say when you having a difficult time so you can get the support you need. Mine is not behaving either. I hope and pray that you get what you need to get on top of your asthma.
Don’t be sorry! We all need a good moan. I have times like you’re describing and it feels like it won’t end - but it does eventually. Until then, let it all off your chest! (No pun intended 😉) x
I know exactly how you feel. I am in and out of A&E all the time and have frequent admissions too. You try not to let it but it gets on top of you sometimes because you can't plan anything ( or if you do, you end up having to cancel or let people down) so sometimes it feels easier not to do anything...not the answer! I also find that if I have had a couple of weeks without needing A&E, I am almost waiting for an attack to occur. Hey ho. It is just so frustrating.
But it is good to read what other people put and know that some are the same and going through the same things.
I hope you made it home for Easter and they didn't keep you in!
How frustrating. It’s so terrifying not being able to breathe and so annoying when you just don’t understand and can’t control it and/or understand whe/why it’s going to happen.
You’re not alone. I know it sounds a bit kind of blah blah but focus on the positives. You have access to good meds and good care, treatment of this disease is changing all the time. The days are getting longer, the sun will shine and you have us to vent at. X
That doesn't sound like fun. I hope you get out soon. If you need contact - do. You're not ranting, don't be sorry - if we're on here we're probably likely to know where you're coming from! Venting some steam is very necessary and healthy.
...If any of you are in hospital, like Js706 (hello and hope it goes as well as possible) or housebound and want some contact - sending smiles to you too. I'm online and send me a message and I'll do my best to listen, reply, or make you laugh, distract...whatever might help!
We’re getting there - albeit very slowly! But things were slightly complicated by a nasal cream they use on the ward I’m on having peanut oil in - resulting in two anaphylactic reactions in 24 hours!! (Thankfully not full blown shock though)
Just what I needed with a severe/life threatening asthma exacerbation 😂
Oh my word!! Just what you need. I'm fairly speechless. I've had anaphylaxis, so am fairly friendly with epi pens and the like and had no idea this was possible. Hope you're enabled to rest now and I really hope the rest of your stay is calmer. I got quite bored at times on wards, and all my daily patterns went haywire, so appreciate it can be tough. Hope you have enough/not too much to keep you occupied
I’m just so surprised that the company puts such a common allergen in it more than anything!
But I can’t complain about how the symptoms were dealt with and at least I was in the right place to have a problem!
Ugh I know, I did get in really well with the other people in my bay but most of them have now gone home or moved to a different ward so the boredom is setting in a bit more!
Glad you're getting good treatment. It's a funny thing how within a few hours you can in effect make friends, and then suddenly it's a whole new bunch. I made friends with a lovely little old Italian lady once and we communicated with my poor Italian and her gifts of cake...
Oh that sounds lovely! I’ve exchanged numbers with one of them (who was in with her first asthma attack) and we’re planning to keep in touch which will be nice 😊
Thx to all for all your support I got home at about 5 in the morning I was just in A&E being observed after a nebuliser given by paramedics I felt fine just fed up because I've been ill on and off since October but since the start of February I've had 5 asthma attacks that have either sent me to hospital or at least required an ambulance and nebulisers and all my plans have gone wrong so I was just fed up so I needed to let out my thoughts and feelings so thank you for giving me support.
I was a little wheezy this morning and I'm tired from being up so late but I'm okay at the moment I will keep you posted if you wish to know
Good luck with it Erin. Lovely to see you getting so many positive replies on here. It's a great little group, despite the reason we are all on here!🙄 Gino
Good luck Erin and hope you begin to feel better soon. Have had tough times with my asthma too. A bit of advice I was given by my consultant will pass it on
Be able to say No. Pace yourself
Take personal responsibility for your own health don't be a fool for anybody. Am unable to work since I was in my late twenties and am now in my sixties I had a very good career
But I realize now your health is your wealth. Hope this little bit of information helps on some small way.
I'm 17 and haven't even had a career yet I've done placements but that's about it
I'm wanting to be a nurse and studying health and social care and I'm not going to get to it if I'm in hospital all the time
Also I've just had to cancel so much, I had a medical test on Thursday which meant I had to miss a trip with my class because I've always prioritised my health before anything else but I am missing good opportunities here
I've had to cancel going up to London about 4 times in a row because of my health
I'm doing okay bit wheezy still might be back in either tonight or tomorrow because my lungs don't even feel like I've had a nebuliser normally my lungs feel amazing for a few days after a neb but not at the moment
Thx for the advice it's hard saying no but I do often say I can't cos of my asthma some say fair enough others (who aren't so understanding ) will try and push me into doing something eg physical activity a day after an asthma attack but I will stand my ground and say I will be back in hospital if I do that etc. x
Well Erin believe it or not I qualified as a General Nurse and Midwife
My problem developed when I was expecting my first baby developed bi lateral broncho pneumonia was working in Intensive Care at the time. I developed Asthma after that infection. Know exactly how you feel having to cancel events. I am the same. It effects you emotional y physically and financially. Lucky I qualified for invalidity pension otherwise I would have to totally depend on my partner. A trigger for me is cold air and infections. I went through a difficult time during the menopause. I have just learned to live with Asthma'. It's not easy though my consultant takes me in and does bronchoscopy s to clear the gunge out of my lungs. Hope this helps.
I’m 22 and in my 4th year of medical school so I understand the struggle of trying to do placements and wanting to study while struggling with the asthma!
It’s hard but it’s definitely possible and I’ve found that my university has been really supportive as I’ve been open with them from the start.
I know what you mean about it being hard to say no to things! But like you I’m slowly starting to learn that there’s no problem with needing to take the time to recover properly
On a positive note Erin I used my skills in other ways became an advocate for disability set up a radio show called ability focus and won an award for the show. Represented my country in the U.N on empowering women and gender equality. Did voluntary work for citizens advice board. I have retired from all of those now and am no longer tied to a timetable. Enjoy visiting my four grandsons and playing the piano accordion which always has been an interest of mine. Those events would never have happened in my life only for I developed Asthma.
Sorry to hear you also are suffering in your chest so much you have been hospitalised. I have felt this could hapen to me but am doing my best tk avoid it!
Have you tried breathing in the steam of herbs such as thyme, sage, oregano, cinnamon, cloves, lemon peel, himalayan salt etc? These help to kill a lot of respiratory infections if done regularly.
Also eating raw onion and garlic in salads with dressing can help a lot, alongside herbal teas such as lemon, ginger and honey, or milk boiled with turmeric, ginger slices, black pepper, cloves, cinnamon, cardamoms and with honey added afterwards.
Antibiotics only help with bacterial infections so viral infections we have to sort ourselves by boosting our imune system and helping to kill as many microbes as possible.
Onion slices in rooms as well as on feet in socks are supposed to help kill microbes. Frankincense incense burned in the house or the oil in a cold diffuser help to also clean the air. Other good oils include lavender, oregano, lemon, thyme, sage, clove, cinnamon etc.
Using olbas oil on our throat and chest also helps to kill bacteria and viruses in our airways and expand them.
Taking daily supplements of vitamin D3 of about 4000iu and Vitamin C 1000iu plus Magnesium 400 to 750 mg plus in smaller amounts- Zinc, Vitamin E, K2, Iron and Selenium- and foods rich in all these all should help the immune system to be stronger.
Salt baths with Magnesium flakes, Epsom salts and himalayan rock salt plus some antiseptic and/ or calming anti inflammatory oils should also be beneficial!
I have been using most of these as we have a flu virus in the house at the moment and I have had a chesty cough (phlegm in lungs) practically all the darker, colder months. Cant wait for the sun to shine on us!
For peace of mind I may insist on a chest x-ray for myself, although I have no pain or other symptoms apart from phlegm in my chest. I think it is just asthma and deficiency of D3 mostly. Your lung pain is something you should keep aware of, although it could be from just coughing a lot. Coughing up blood is a bad sign and then an x ray is definitely advisable.
I hope this is helpful!
Best wishes and prayers for a quick and complete recovery of your good health and strength,
Try to persuade your doctor that you are a trusted expert. Have them give you an emergency pack of steroids and if necessary antibiotics so that as soon as your Oxygen levels plummet you can start taking and then book s check up - since my consultant agreed I’ve improved with the stress removed
Hi had paramedic out again last night but didn't go to A&E cos I didn't feel it was necessary and last time they just observed me for a few hrs and kicked me out so both me and the paramedic agreed to stay put
However I did require two nebulisers one with just salbutamol and the other with salbutamol and ipratropium which I'm guessing is stronger
Struggling a bit again today the nebulisers aren't lasting they may keep me at bay for a little longer than 4 hrs but I do get wheezy again I'm so fed up with this I need to get something other than asthma back into my life
As much as I love chatting to the paramedics I feel so guilty cos I've called them out so many times for a nebuliser and costing NHS so much but I know I need it but I'd also like some decent sleep without having the need for paramedics
Thx all for your support this hasn't been an easy ride this last few months but has been made easy due to the support I've received from you all
I’ve heard a lot about salt therapy and borrowed a salt lamp from a lady I work with. As far as I’m aware it’s made a difference to me as it purifies the air within my room, and I think it’s helping. Maybe that’s something you could look into investing in? Or even borrow one if you know anyone who has one to see if it can help you x
