how is havin asthma going to change my life ?
Hi. Asthma will change your life but don't let it rule it. Get as much help as you can from your GP, asthma nurse or health professional. Avoiding triggers is vital but it depends on how sensetive you are to those triggers.
Definately avoid any kind of household sprays and spray on deoderants. If you have a pet remember it's not only the fur but the dander that can spark a reaction.
All in all just be sensible and follow your meds plan as closely as possible.
Also this website is extremely useful for and advice and support. There are a lot of kind and friendly people on here.
Take care. Dave.
Hi and welcome to the forums!
there are many things that can help to improve and maintain quality of life, even though you have asthma.
- see your GP, and ask for an appointment with the asthma nurse specialist.
- have a browse of this website, its got loads of helpful info and tips. there is a section on common asthma triggers and how to avoid them, explains different types of meds, and also a check list of things you may want to ask your gp and asthma nurse.
- try keeping a symptom and peak flow diary, as this may help you to identify your triggers, and thus avoid them when possible in the future.
- if you have questions, dont hesitate to ask your gp or asthma nurse. also asthma uk has a nurse advice line, top left of the screen. they are very helpful and understanding.
i hope all goes well and you feel better soon. let us know how you get on!

many thanks for your kind words and surport, i have a appiontment with my asthma nurse 16 jan, so i will write down any questions i need to ask, the site seems really helpful , so i will be using it quite a lot to start with. i was really shocked about the comment about using sprays , i would never have thought of that , so i have a lot to learn, i use sprays all the time, cleaning ect, never even thought about that being a trigger, no pets luckly.
PS the folk on here have a whole range of severity re asthma. Some it bothers a lot, some hardly at all. So don't look at the 'how is it going to change' so much as 'identifying the triggers' eg cleaning stuff. Re: Cleaning stuff anyway, the less chemicals released into the air the better for the planet. See? Good things can come of asthma. I find the lemony products are the worst and as good a reason for one's other half to get going on the cleaning. Husbands are a dab hand with the hoover, I find. It is a shock this first diagnosis, can well remember. Only couple of years into it myself and still learning. Lots of info on this site. Phone or email the AUK nurses for more information. They're very good I found. Take care and don't worry about getting to the gym until not so tired out. You will get there. Many asthmatics take part in sport, run marathons, do bike rides, climb mountains. No need to see it as a hold-back on life.
hi, i just joined this site and find it really good having people to chat to, difficult unless u have asthma sometimes to understand how it affects you, i go to the gym, hold down a full time job, and go out, i have just looked at my triggers and adjusted ....
if poorly go to the swiming baths and chill instead of gym work
avoid sprays and tell people if they could avoid spraying around you
get someone else to empty the hoover lol ( especially if you allegic to dust like me )
wrap up if windy , extremes of weather,
be careful when you go out i have had bad attcks when in clubs etc when they realse smoke effects
and the best thing on here is when you feel like people are getting sick of you always feelin poorly and think you should be ""better by now"", there are always people on here to have a good chat to on how you feeling and give support x
Hya,
I can see youve had plenty of good advice and granny is right when she said asthma varies so much.
I count myself very lucky as i only have quite mild asthma.
Once your dr/cons have sorted your meds etc, hopefully you will be able to carry on as normal.
You will learn what triggers you, so if you can avoid these triggers, thats a good thing.
Good luck, hope you gain control asap and carry on living your life
