montelukast
Hi
My toddler was put on Montelukast when he was just over 2 1/2 years old, and they really helped
with the night time coughing, but they didnt really change his behaviour etc we only
use the tablets when he is ill with a cold now as we find as he is geting older (4) his chest is getting better touch wood. Maybe you should get him chekced over by the doc incase he has a virus or ear infection etc and he is feeling under the weather..or he may be having a reaction to the tablet, best to get him checked out.

i've seen parents post that their child has become hyper once put on montelukast and turn into little monsters, alternative and doesn't usually give the same nasty side effects is Accolate, can only ask.
Hi My Son has ADHD and mild autism and montelukast... can you imagine? we were scraping him off the walls to start with. We have been to an alternative clinic for his issues which has totally changed our lives. It cost a fortune but has been worth every penny. He is now emotionally normal and so happy and his asthma is easier to control because of the emotional triggers. My Son had problems before the montelukast but this really through a spanner in the works but it has saved his life.
Hope you get things sorted soon, his brother went through hell as he was at the receiving end of it all.

My girl was 3 when started on it, over a year ago. She did react in that way at first, and had worse nights with bad dreams and night terrors increasing. Then it all settled down and boy, did it help her asthma. I'm not sure it's as effective as it was for the first 6 months as she's had to have more and more meds added on but who knows. She's still on it now.
wow you got me thinking. my 7year old son was put on montelukast 5mg around 8mths ago. in the last 7mth he gone from a nice child to being referred to the mental health team as he so angry n violent towards everyone be it me siblings teachers etc.could it be this tablet that changed him?????????????
My son had this when he was 3 and had severe pyscological side effects. He turned into the child from hell and no one wanted to be around him, we went on for several months before putting 2 and 2 together. Within a month of stopping it he was back to being his normal self.
It did help his asthma and after stopping it he had attackes every 3 weeks until the Dr found a better combination of inhalers. He is now 5 and, touch wood, has only had one attack in over a year.
My advice would be to voice your concerns with your consultant/Dr and see what they say.
Hiya halfpint, we had exactly the same thing and the resp nurse took him off it straight away. It actually says on his notes that he was ""stroppy all the time"". Haha. He had very vivid dreams too and nighttime wakings. I'd go back to whoever prescribed it and tell them about it. It's a real shame as it's made such a difference for those who can take it without adverse events. As an alternative our old resp nurse upped his flixotide dose but it's never really gotten him controlled. My lad has allergies (dust mites, dander etc) so that's why they wanted to use montelucast. The new resp nurse has now put him on citirizine (antihistamine) and it's worked a treat (as he was getting rhinitis and thus triggering his asthma), so from today we reduce his steroid dose. It's worth talking to your prescriber about. Hope you get sorted xx
Hi, halfpint,
montelukast could do miracles for some kids, for others it does nothing. Give it a bit more time and see if it helps with the asthma symptoms. If yes, try to adjust the dose with your doctor. Sometimes the mood changes will go away. If they do not, then you should think what is best for your child ; there are many more medications which could be tried.
From my own experience the montelukast did nothing to improve the asthma of my boy. He took it for 6 months. Even after reducing the dose he was overly aggressive with the other kids (he was 18 months) and we had all mentioned nightmares and screams. The moment we took him off he was back to normal.
I have to say, that we changed the doctor and he was the one to suggest that the medication doesn't work. When I asked him how he new , he said: if his condition does not get worst after a few days, you will know also.
So, good luck!
