3 weeks until superpath hip replacement

it’s becoming very real now! I need both hips replaced, my left is going first as only 10% mobility left even though my right is more painful.

I have chosen Superpath to avoid muscle and tendon cut through all being well. A bit of a trek from Scotland to Leicester where there is an experienced surgeon but hoping it’ll be worthwhile.

I had wanted to lose some weight before but sadly it’s a lot harder with reduced mobility so still sitting with a BMI of 30.

Any tips for things I should be getting ready now, I’ve been practicing sleeping on my back, ordered a hip ice pack. Will take that bin bag for getting in and out the car coming back. Got some long pull over my head dressed as expecting bending over and pulling on trousers will not be possible for a few days.

Hi, no advice as I’ve not been through one of those ops thankfully - presumably you’ll be back on the blood thinners for a while?! I just hope it all goes well for you - maybe you’ll see 4chickens (no I don’t mean that you’ll be hallucinating actually seeing 4chickens ) you know what/who I mean - good luck 🍀 xxx

I was just about to recommend the same grabber. As a nurse we advised them for our patients. Made easy work of getting undies and trousers on without bending. As well as picking things up off the floor.

A sock puller on is very helpfulI found a rigid one on amazon. Also a pillow between the knees in bed is useful. Make sure you do the exercises and take any painkillers offered. I found walking a little every day and gradually increasing the distance. I only have one replacement hip but it's still going strong after 22 years. Due for a knee replacement in 4 weeks, which I am and not looking forward to as I know it's much more painful than a hip

I found a leg lifter a very valuable tool Have a look on Amazon it makes getting in and out of bed so much easier They may give you a sheet that you can put on the car seat that is better than your bin bag I was given one it's lovely material that is easy to "slide" on

Wishing you all the very best

I have had both my hips replaced and feel great for it x

That is good news! Has mine in December and it was the best tho v ever!you honestly would not know I’ve had one! No pain from day I had it done apart from the surgery wound bits 😄 I had already bought lots of items from a raised loo seat down to a grabber. I used them while waiting for my op as was way over due. Anyway the hospital team give you everything you need so don’t panic……..and wishing you luck.

Hi there I had a total hip replacement op end of November 2023. I had to purchase the leg lifter, a long shoe horn and the grabber from the hospital but they really do come in handy like most people have said on here! You will also need the raised loo seat. The hospital provide this but I purchased one from Argos! Also I would advise you do the exercises on the sheet the hospital physio give you before the surgery in preparation. I wish you all the best. 👍🏼 Take care.

I agree with everyone else. I have had two hip replacements and the grabber is really useful. I still use it, being lazy!!

best of luck! I had my second hip replacement 6 months ago and doing well. Walking is the best thing for the recovery. Use heel to toe and keep back straight. My consultant js old fashioned so I had a huge scar to contend with and sone pain after the op but I knew what to expect. The grabber is helpful as was the raised toilet seat at home which I am now giving back.

Best of luck for a speedy recovery.
