seize up

Hi everyone,

Those with arthritis in the hip, I wonder if you have any tips for me.

When I try to stand up from a chair, increasingly I can only describe it as seizing up. I can not put any weight onto my bad leg and just stand there in terrible pain unable to move at all. I use one crutch but that does not help . It is as though severe cramp in my leg and can sometimes have to stand for 15 to 20 minutes until a slight let up lets me move but every step just makes me want to cry. I just do not know how to deal with this. The pain does go when I am seated again but I can not spend all day in a chair afraid to stand up. I do take co-codamol 6 tablets a day

So hoping someone can tell me what they do in this situation. Thank you

I had dreadful pain in my hip and in the end I had a hip replacement, one if the best things I ever did. I walk along now and think about the pain I used to have in the past. What does your doctor say?

Hi....sorry to read of your hip pain.....at pain clinic it was suggested to sit on a raised chair rather than trying to get up from the average height armchair....of course it would have to be made safe...when my sciatica is at its worst I can only sit on a dining table chair...not the most comfy but easier to get up and down from. Hope you find some relief soon.

I seen people wear hip braces I'm not sure the exact name but its like a neoprene on upper leg that comes up the side if hip and wraps around waist area to keep it in place (reminds me of old western gun holster) might be worth a look.

I was also in terrible pain from osteoarthritis of the hip and, like you, would seize up on standing and be unable to move. The pain was unbearable, even with all the medication. I recently had a total hip replacement and the pain has completely gone and I am walking normally again. Surgery was , in my opinion, the only solution and I am delighted with the result.

Thanks for your reply. So comforting to know someone understands, Will go for a hip replacement but the waiting list is so long.
