Not sure about this one - can you actually choose to be happy or sad for that matter? Surely it is caused mainly by life events and - I suppose - how you react to them? I think happiness cannot be contrived or consciously chosen, happiness very often comes unexpectedly after months of despair and depression but it can be so hard waiting for those black clouds to lift and for the sun to eventually shine through. And yes I agree, the mind can make its own heaven and hell, but the hell of depression is nobody’s fault as nobody chooses to be like that.
When I was a kid just out of university, I wanted to leave the smaller midwestern town I grew up in and insisted on moving to California and told my parents that I could find heaven on earth near the beech and far away from them. My father sat me down and said that a person should never base their happiness on geography and that looking for “happiness” in a different location was never going to be an answer. Of course, having a rebellious spirit, that just made me want to leave even more and so did. 30 yrs later, and still in CA, I can now say that he was right. Our happiness is not based on a “place we need to find.” We are the same wherever we are. Xx
