My 17 year old is on fluoxetine for 5 weeks, now becoming paranoid and even more depressed! Is this a side effect or something more ominous?

I would strongly suggest checking with his doctor. This doesn't sound normal. Especially after five weeks and with the self harm involved. I'd reach out immediately.

Meds can have a negative effect and cause suicidal or homicidal feelings, especially in young people. Get him/her to the doc.

It suggests to me that your son doesn't need to boost his serotonin that is what fluoxetine aka prozac will do

You have mentioned bipolar in your profile well serotonin stops manic episodes but during deppresive modes of BPD serotonin would make depression worse

The opposite of serotonin is dopamine

Too much dopamine fuels mania

But if people are deficient in dopamine they may lack a get up and go attitude

I'm 32 and have been on it since last July, it wasn't working for me so they just kept increasing it til I was at the maximum dosage, my suicidal thoughts, paranoia and anger gradually got worse as time went on, I'm coming off it now and will be done with it for good on Tuesday. I don't know if it's the seretonin as someone else suggested as I was on zoloft for 8 years and never got this bad especially in such a short time. The only reason I changed is because I built up a tolerance to the zoloft, but I'm going back on it as the fluoxetine was slowly killing me.
