Hello all! When could you get back to exercising after a DVT? I just bought a stationary bike and am dying to start but still having pain, swelling etc. All the best in these crazy times!

I was told when I left hospital when I asked about safe exercise walking was fine but to stop if it hurt or I was puffed and I think you start back when you feel ready and work up.

Best of luck!

Hi Annie, your question is near enough to my own as I went back to work after a week of being diagnosed with DVT and I'm finding it difficult to cope with the pain as I'm on my feet most of the day.

It's funny as no one at the hospital ever mentioned about work so I just went back, I feel it's a bad idea now as my leg is so painful and swollen. I know I haven't answered your question but why don't you do this, phone your GP as that is what I am going to do tomorrow. Take care

Hi Travis,

Omg, that sounds horrible! I work from home and lift my leg when sitting. I can’t imagine standing all day!

Do you have compression stockings? A specialist from the Thrombosis Expertise Centre in the Netherlands told me the studies have not been clear so far, but there was a new study that showed benefit of compression stockings (below the knee, only the affected leg) to prevent long-term pain and swelling. So I’m just waiting for mine now.

And I notice the leg is more swollen for two days after exercising (20-30 min stationary bike), so I just listen to my body and don’t push it too much.

Take care and good luck talking to your GP!

Thank you for your reply, I don't have compression stockings as nobody at the hospital mentioned wearing them.

I think I will have to get a sick note as I keep having to rest my leg every so often as the pain becomes unbearable.

I work at Sainsbury's on my feet all day.

Did you manage to get that sick note?

Hi Annie, I foolishly didn't and I realize it was a mistake trying to carry on at work.

I went off sick only yesterday as my leg was so swollen and I had terrible pain in my knee

How are you?

Ow damn. Really take it easy! It’s a serious condition and you don’t want to get post-thrombotic syndrome.

I can work from home and elevate the leg when sitting, so I’m lucky.

Oh that's good, I'm glad you can work from home 😊 I told work not to expect to see me for a while.

I'm positive and I'm going with it. Yes health comes first. Can I ask you where abouts in this mad world you are as I'm in Blackpool. X

Hi - I had a DVT diagnosed in February - took my full course of Rivaoxaban. Like you, no advice when to start taking excercise - but excercise got forced upon me by COVID. I work at our local hospital so am having to walk six miles a day to and fro. Have had no adverse reaction - in fact, gentle excercise is good to prevent further DVTs. Listen to your body. If your local hospital has a nurse led Thrombosis Service (as mine does) use them. Hope it all works out. The compression stockings help - you can get funky ones on Amazon.
