Holiday insurance company suggestions required please.

Hello fellow anticoag gang, I plan to holiday abroad in August and wondered if any of you could recommend specific holiday Insurance companies that specialise with the likes of us on anticoagulants? I and my family already have our E111 cards but obviously want holiday insurance as a back up. Thanks in advance folks - hope to hear from you soon.

Hi. I can recommend ElectTravel Insurance, the trading name of Insure For Travel Ltd. They will give 12 month, multi-trip insurance for the likes of us, up to 70 years of age and are very economical too. I pay £116 for a joint policy for my wife and I, worldwide for a year, multi-trip up to 30days per trip. This is their Gold Cover but they do have cheaper versions and will do single trip for much less. Past medical issues not a problem if declared in advance. Find them on-line or get back to me next week if you can't but I am in the Canaries this week, fully insured!

Hi, I am aged 74 and am sporting a new 'Total Knee Replacement' as well as the single stent that I acquired in April 2012. I have taken out an annual multi-trip policy with LV for myself and Senior Management which covers Europe including Turkey and Egypt for £260. If you are contemplating travel to the USA however you will find that premiums are fairly astronomical due to the excessive cost of healthcare in the States.

Hi, I used Boots travel insurance. Although it cost more than my husbands (who doesnt take anticoagulants) it wasn't astronomical and they were happy to cover me. Enjoy your trip

I have just insured with InsureandGo. This is the first time since I got ill with a DVT and PE. You need to check whether they can insure you for private care should the national care of the country not be available. Usually, they will go foor the cheapest. Declare EVERYTHING and phone and check if you are in doubt about anything. Even if you have been 'cured' of an illness it could still affect your insurance if you don't declare it.

Hi I am looking for medical travel insurance due to having anti thrombin 3 def and having 2 episodes of PE, I went onto money compare and the cheapest I found was avanti plus, but then I phoned insure and go and they beat the quote by £15, so it is worth checking all companies and make sure they are covering you for all your health needs, also it is more expensive if you are holidaying outside of Europe

Have used Direct Travel direct-travel.co.uk in past now currently using travel insurance offered free by bank but have to pay top up for declared condition. Works out less than the previous insurers still.

Hi, you probably have your insurance sorted but because of my recent experience I thought I would chip in!!! I used Holidayrisk recently for two months in the Caribbean, and they did a medical screening on me over the phone as I had already had two DVTs in the past. It cost me £50 (in Jan 2014) for a visit from 20th Jan to 10th March in Grenada. Anyway, whilst there, I was diagnosed with my third blood clot. I was admitted to a private hospital and my insurance took care of a lot and were amazing! I paid for my initial diagnosing scan and a £200 deposit (which I will be getting back from the hospital), and the insurance guaranteed payment for the first 48hrs, after which they would have the medical reports and be able to go from there. When I came out, the paid for frequent INR and doctor visits, extra scans, warfarin etc. To top it all off, after 3 weeks when I was good to fly home, they sent out the most amazing nurse from the UK to fly with me and put us in Business class on BA so I could stretch my legs! They even had a medical transport car there with a paramedic to drive me home and even though I can walk I was put in a wheelchair to and from the plane (and was also carried up the steps of the plane in my chair by 4 very strong guys!)!! Since I have been home, they have phoned me to see how I am feeling and to tell me to make sure I claim back my out of pocket expenses!!! So amazing and just wanted to recommend them to anyone who has any medical concerns!!!

Since I have had 3 TIA's I've never had to insure myself for flying. howev er, my Daughter is getting married in Greece in October this year. We fly to Crete, then on to Santorini, a small island nearby. I'll try holidayrisk and see what's on offer. I hope I get treated as well as you. I'll get back to you with an update.Take care.

Wow Kari1410, thank you for your message. That's certainly fantastic care and service you have experienced. Thank goodness they came up trumps! I'm sorry you've endured a 3Rd blood clot! It must have been an awful shock? It's nice to know that you are back home safe and sound now! They could of at least let you keep one of blokes that carried you to your plane - lol! I shall add holidayrisk to my list too! Thank you for taking time to share your valuable experience and please take care of yourself.

Depends on your ages and where you want to travel and if you want one-off holiday or annual, multi-trip cover. Most affordable insurers will not cover for existing conditions but you could try "Insure & Go" who will cover you and are reasonable for single trips for those under 70. For annual, multi-trip cover for my wife and I get a great deal from Elect Travel Online but it excludes cover for pre-existing health problems.
