These are worrying times for all of us, and the those of us in the AMN community can be forgiven for feeling especially at risk.

Some sources I have seen suggest that having a neurological disease automatically puts us into the more vulnerable groups. I am not sure exactly why, but perhaps our immune systems are more compromised.

At any rate, it makes sense to do everything we can to protect ourselves. That means all of the things that our respective authorities have told us to do: social distancing, self-isolation and hand washing. Keeping well-hydrated is also important especially as we generally have bladder problems. As someone who has pretty much been self-isolating anyway for the last two years following my neck-of-femur leg brake, I feel somewhat practised in this art!

I came across this suggestion today from a site with Chinese connections:

“1. Get an oximeter. Why? The current coronavirus test in the US is not accurate according to my sources. Because the virus may or may not be at your nose or throat at time of test. Usually it takes 2-3 times to give a more accurate test results. For citizens, the best test is to use an oximeter and watch the oxygen level in your blood. This is a much more reliable way to discover if you are infected with the virus and you can do it easily at home. “

These claims seem unprovable to me, and a lower level of oxygen in the blood may be due to more that Covid-19. Despite that, having an oximeter on-hand is something I had not considered and it seems like a good idea, and a step up from a plain old thermometer.

AMN Easier is here to provide a place for us all to air our concerns about AMN and to share ideas. Now we have another disease to consider, so please do use the forum as much as you want at this time. And look after yourselves, everyone.

Thanks, Chris! I hadn't thought of using an oximeter … since my husband has been hospitalized twice in the last 18 months I know that we have one tucked away.

We're all hearing and reading so much! Similar to use of an oximeter, I'd read to empty your lungs and then take a very deep breath, hold it for 10-12 seconds and then exhale completely. Might be a good practice but the oximeter is definitely conclusive with each breath as we can see our results!

Thanks Chris, I am self isolating as well, with my husband. saw my GP last week and told him I had cancelled my hospital appointments, he agreed and said it would be a good idea to stay home.

Hope everyone on here stay safe and well, take care

Thanks Chris, will look at an oximeter. It is very unsettling at the moment with so much advice and updates very confusing!!!! I do consider myself to be fit and having to stay home not good so trying to walk twice a day and do exercises . With 6 grandchildren and 2 children self employed the added stress doesn’t help. They are all struggling with no school or GCSE exams and being childminders!!!!!!

Trying to support from afar as need to distance thank goodness for WhatsApp .

Stay safe and well everyone hope to see light at the end of the tunnel soon, Sue xx
