Does anyone else take two doses of bisoporol. I take 2.5 mg morning and night. My doctor said most people take it in one dose. But wondered why she split the doses.

When I took Bisoprolol it was originally prescribed to be taken in morning - 5mg. Side effects were unacceptable nose bleeds so my GP said take at night. No problems and 12 years later I was changed to Nebivolol, 5mg, again, taken at night. No problems. But last April 2024, my new Cardiac Consultant changed me to Sotalol ... this time 40mg in morning and 40mg in evening.

A full dose on a morning completely wiped me out, it dropped my BP and heart rate so low I could barely get out of the chair

Same here.

Morning Myflowers.

Bis and I didn't get on too well. Taking 5mg in the morning made me feel like a zombie for the day. I used to split it - 2.5mg in the morning (after food to slow down the absorption rate) and 2.5mg in the evening before bed so I could sleep off the 'zombie effect'.

Suggest this to your medic❓

I take 5mg bisoprolol twice daily, it suits me better than taking 10mg in one go. We are all different and our bodies respond differently to the same drug.

Bisoprolol can make you feel really tired and lacking in energy. Some people just take their dose at night. It sounds wise of your doctor to split yours into two doses. When I took that drug it was the same dose as yours and I felt better than I had for years.

I’ve been on bisoprolol before, and splitting doses is pretty common for some people. It can help keep the medication steady in your system throughout the day. Your doctor might’ve split it to reduce the chance of side effects or to better suit how your body responds. If it works for you, that’s what matters!

I take two doses now, but I didn’t used to, but following a stay in hospital I agreed to it. I take 1.25 in the morning and 2.5 at night. My episodes used to happen more at night, so it seemed better to work like that.

yes, I take 5 mg in the morning and 1.25 mg in the evening.

I take 7.5 at breakfast time!

I take 5mg in morning and 2.5mg at night. Agreed following a hospital stay and works better for me than 7.5mg in one go. Following an ablation in December 2023, I was advised by Arythmia nurse that I could stop the evening dose, but I had an AF episode within a fortnight of the change, so they advised I start up again. I am feeling quite settled on this dose now and don't want to rock the boat!!

Myflowers2 in reply toSputnik56

Yes that's the same dose I have been on but my blood pressure and heart beat is quite low in the upper 40's. So I am trying 2.5mg morning and night. Bit worried don't want to risk it either.

Sputnik56 profile image
Sputnik56 in reply toMyflowers2

I would love to reduce it to what you are on and maybe that is next step for me. My HR is also around high 40's/low 50's which has never been a concern for my arythmia team, but my BP is high normal so need to keep an eye on that. Apart from low energy reserves from time to time, I'm ticking along nicely for the moment. Oh to be drug free :-)

I take 10mg each morning

How different we all are! As I’ve recorded here before, the lowest dose of 1.25mg was too much for me to take daily as it brought my heart rate down too low and I was taken off it after three days. That’s how I came to be introduced to Flecainide by the EP I saw privately (along with having a Kardia and smartphone) after my surgery didn’t come up with anything else. Good luck getting what works for you.

i take a similar Beta Blocker called Metoprolol it comes in slow release (one a day) and immediate release (morning and night). I take a lower dose but twice a day and have no side effects. I think the Bisoprolol only comes in slow release so generally only taken once a day though i know some here split dose to lessen side effects

Took it for several years. Caused sleep problems and ED. Changed to Nebivolol recently - everything much better. Wish I’d been on it years ago.

i it in a morning. But last year the cardiologist told me to take an extra 1.25mg just before bed in the hope it may ease my ectopic beats.

AAW2024 profile image
AAW2024 in reply toJetcat

Wondered if that worked for you. I'm only on 1.25 in the morning. But I seem to struggle with what my cardiologist says is hearing the ectopic beats. If I feel palpitations then it's usually at night. Advised I could take another 1.25 bisophorol at night as needed. Pill in pocket use. I've only done that once after a bad day...and it seemed to work.

Jetcat profile image
Jetcat in reply toAAW2024

My ectopics only ever cease to stop or slow down when THEY decide to unfortunately.! I have tried taking the extra 1.25mg before bed and I haven’t really seen a great difference to be honest.! I take 10mg every morning so the extra 1.25 probably won’t do much anyway maybe.?

AAW2024 profile image
AAW2024 in reply toJetcat

It's all a minfield isn't it?! I'm fairly recently diagnosed july last year. Onlt had my first consultationin February, by phone. ...I'm not even sure what ectopic beats are..or if I should worry I can hear them etc!!

Jetcat profile image
Jetcat in reply toAAW2024

Don’t worry about ectopics and palpitations AAW. I truly know they can cause great worries and anxiety believe me.! Iv had them for decades well before my AFIB was diagnosed. Iv seen lots of specialists over the years, had tests ,scans etc etc, and every one of them has always told me they’re nothing to worry about.( I didn’t believe them at the time unfortunately) but It’s only taken me nearly 40 years to realise their actually correct 😮

Im sure you’ll be fine, but it’s early days for you yet with this nuisance of a thing and it will take time for you to realise that although sometimes frightening and worrying things will be ok.👍

Best wishes

Ron,

hi I had a successful ablation 10 years ago only had 2 AF episodes in that period of time. I’m on 5mgs Bisoprolol in a morning and 2.5mgs at night. I thought I would have been taken off Bisoprolol by now but cardiologist only reduced the evening dose from 5 to 2.5mgs at night at my request.

I’ve had the same in the past. Even had 3.75 twice a day. Just on 2.5 am now only but taking other meds. Good luck.

I take one in a morning and one in an evening - i feel it’s better this way - as my heart likes to creep up a bit at night. I’ve found taking it later at night about 8.30/9.00 pm helps me

I split my BP meds as it gives better control over the 24hrs.

I used to take 5mg in the morning and resembled a character in the Living Dead. The GP switched me to 2.5.mg and 2.5 at night which improved matters. Many people find bigger doses a real knockout.

Hi,

2.5 morning and night for me. The idea being to keep steady rate control and minimise the sleepiness.

I take my 5mg in two doses - one morning and then one after lunch. Seems to work ok for me. I suggested to my GP taking in two doses to avoid my heart rate dropping too much if I took the full dose in one go. She was happy to agree to that.

I suppose a very few people metabolise the drug slightly differently to make a BD dose make sense, but its half-life is long and that suits a once-daily dosing regime perfectly. After a few days the blood levels reach a "steady state" anyway making 24-hour dosing the obvious way.

I take similar metoprolol at one time tartrate now succrate. It was also increased twice a day mg each. Besides having tachycardia and flutter I have heart failure. It has improved since the pacemaker from 40 ejection rate to 70s although I seem to be having some issues since I had some type of a virus in November that won’t go away.

I have never had side effects that I am aware of and would actually put the blame on other things instead. I am also on a statin twice a day and losartan BP twice a day. Those two were recently pushed up again because of whatever is going on with whatever is going on with since becoming sick with the virus. I tested negative for everything else. FYI. If my doctor does certain things with my meds, it’s for a reason because most of my meds never get touched even though we go over them. I am also on Xarelto which no one will ever get to take away from me lol. Unless you’re having bed side effects, etc. I suggest you do what the doctor tells you if something doesn’t seem right talk to him. until it was changed last week all of a sudden my heart rate has been in the 90s. I have not had any issues since the pacemaker until this virus. I’m calling it a virus because they had treated with everything they had and nothing helped. They were baffled so they were treating the symptoms that is the GP unfortunately, my EP moved away in October thankfully, I’m going to a new one in a few weeks. Finally sometimes you need a village.

I take 12.5mg daily . To fit in with all my other medication I take 6.25mg at 2.00pm together with my first 5mg of Ramipril and the second lot at midnight, just before bed. It seems to work for me but everyone is different and I suppose it depends on what other meds you are taking as to whether they play nicely together.
