Back in AFib 137 HR 5 days post Cardioversion (cries)

Feeling sad. woke up 23:00 felt fast irregular pulse, tried cube breathing but did not help much, so checked Kardia 137HR and poss AFib. As been reduced from 10 to 2.5mg Bisoprolol took another 2.5mg. Will see how it goes tomorrow. But a bit at a loss, when I was diagnosed end nov last year I quickly became persistent and needed the 10mg plus digoxin to take rate below 100 (mostly 80-90). Scared now as still a newbie to the beast!

Hi Purplekatt and welcome to the forum and the world of cardioversion disappointments! Like you my AF slipped quite quickly into persistent following diagnosis and I remember the disappointment and sense of hopelessness I felt when the CV only kept me in normal rhythm for 5 days. You have my sympathies.

The good news is that staying in NSR even for a few days is a very positive sign that further intervention is likely to prove successful. In fact these days CV is thought of more as a diagnostic tool than a cure. Although they did try me with a second CV (for which they placed me on nasty drug amiodorone) again it only worked less than a week.

Yet these blissful few days of NSR is what gave the consultant EP (electrophysiologist) the confidence to proceed with a cardio ablation. I booked a private consultation with him but had the ablation with NHS (same consultant). I’ve now been in NSR for a year and a half and if the AF returns I will happily have a touch-up ablation.

Please do make sure to discuss your situation with an EP not just a GP or regular cardiologist. This is a field of treatment that has made many advancements in recent years and GPs can’t keep up with everything. And remember, this forum is the most supportive place you’ll find but don’t forget there are hundred of people out there who have successful procedures for AF every week, but who may not hang around here!

Thanks so much! I am waiting for GP pharmacy team to call me back to advise on immediate medication to take. I have an appointment with EP 19 March, he is on holiday now, but will check if he has time before the 19th.

Have you tried Diltiazem? My cardiologist changed me to them and it was a game changer. I still have little flutters, but they don’t get in the way of my life.

My cardioversion lasted less than 48 hours but even that is seen as a good sign because it proves that the afib can be treated. The next step maybe an ablation which has a far higher success rate.

Yup, it was 72 hours for me.

I can empathize with your disappointment. Based on my own experience and posts I’ve read on this forum I wonder why they bother with Cardio Version at all. Still it must provide long term relief for some.

Hi I had AF for many years and on Sotalol 80mgs twice a day for 10years then last March I had a cyro ablation Sotalol was stopped and put on Bisoprolol 2.5.mgs daily since then and up to now I’ve had no AF issues the main effect I’ve suffered from is some weight gain and unfortunately constipation pulse rate always between 50 and 60 hope you get it sorted

Sorry I missed this post of yours & so sorry your cardioversion didn't last very long, it must have been so upsetting for you, but as others have pointed out, at least you now know that you can revert back so don't give up hope. My fear is going through the process & waking up to be told it hadn't been a success because I'm not sure what happens from there.

Hopefully I will be having mine soon but I won't be expecting it to last, my cardiologist warned me weeks ago that it would likely last no more than a few days if It worked.

I'm persistent/ constant with a 100% burden with hf to boot so I'm aware the odds are stacked against me. I've had a terrible couple of days & nights unable to sleep for very long due to meds I think plus my blood pressure is always too low. When I Google low blood pressure, afib & hf, which I'm told I shouldn't, it doesn't look very promising.

Fingers crossed for you! I also seem to be persistent, I have not been out of Afib since I reverted back and from today back up on 10mg Bisoprolol, was on 7.5mg yesterday but had to take another 2.5mg in the evening as rate was 127 for quite some time. Seeing EP next Wednesday so hope to have a plan then.
