Yes, I have the constant runny nose which often appears worse at the start of the day. Was going to ask the same question here myself if anyone else had that symptom. When I'm cold I'm really cold, but if I walk down the hill (about a quarter of a mile) to my small town I'm often unbearably hot and have to take off and tie my coat around my waist. Everyone else is bundled up with warm coats and hats, how I envy them. Walking home up the hill I don't get hot, it's all very weird.

I take Warfarin and Metoprolol, what are you on for your AF?

Bisoprolol and apixaban

Hmm, so it looks like we can't blame our meds. It will be interesting to hear what other people have to say. I've heard of lots of people that have that constant runny nose problem.

I'm on the same meds you've mentioned plus five more for HF. I feel the cold more but have done for some time so I don't really know if I had Afib for many years before it was discovered last August.

Although I feel the cold suddenly, such as when getting into car before heating it, my top half will warm up pretty quickly compared to my feet which seem to take forever to warm up again, even when car heater is directed at feet. It feels very strange to have different body parts feel so hot & so very cold at the same time.

In the summer I become too hot though & that can be much worse than feelling the cold for me.

Air-con has to go on straight away in car & if I could afford to, I'd have it in my home too.

I feel as though my body has no natural thermostat.

I believe I've had something wrong with either my heart or my circulatory system since I was a child.

I've always joked & blamed it on an older half sister who stuck my finger into a light switch & flicked it on when I was around six.

Even as a teenager I couldn't really feel comfortable wearing rings through the night because my fingers would swell during the night.

At around aged 17 my feet started to turn purple when cold, now they can randomly turn purple during any season.

And from the age of around seven my ankles would slightly swell, especially during the summer. I was normal height & weight, & even now I'm only slightly overweight but retain fluid because of poor heart function.

I've mentioned all of this to my cardiologist because I believe it all has all led to where I am today being diagnosed with HF & Afib.

He couldn't tell me which occured first either, the afib or the HF.

This sounds like dysautonomia.

Hi, I experienced exactly the same when taking Bisoprolol. As soon.as I was able to stop (followimg successful ablation), the symptoms disappeared.

Bisoprolol can give you a runny nose, I had one when on it also beta blockers can make you cold, not a side effect I had though.

I’m on bisoprolol and also have the runny nose. It’s not dramatic. I just need a tissue ready!

I also am on Bisoprolol and have a permanent dripping nose with tissues always at the ready!

I'm on apixaban, but not bisoprolol, and have the constantly runny nose.

Interesting. My mum is 89, last year at 88 she never had this. Newly diagnosed in 2023 with AF, hear failure and Raynauds. Has been a full year on apixaban, spironolactone and diltiazem now . Runny nose showed up this winter. Odd thing is it's exactly like jeanjeanies, streaming badly in the morning, and then moderately if she gets cold. Worse in one nostril. Not an issue at 88 though so totally confused by this.... 🫠

pusillanimous in reply toCarerEdi

I don't take Biso every day, just on an 'as needed' basis- I take 1,25mg if my HR gets into the early 90s, but on the days I do, I get this streaming nose of clear fluid - I think it comes from my brain !!!! but the odd thing is, it only happens when I enter my kitchen or scullery!!!!

Yes to runny nose and feeling cold but I have hypothyroidism so my temperature control is well trashed anyway. I take Bisoprolol and Apixaban.

For years and years I had congestion in my sinuses that was annoying, but I lived with it. Then I started to take Eliquis (apixiban), and my nose is now runny for much of the day. The congestion is gone, however.

hi glad you asked this I just thought it was because I lost weight!! I get extremely cold I have to wear more layers than ever and sit with an electric blanket on and I’m only 51!! I’m on Apixiban for my AF and I think since being on blood thinners I feel the cold more

Nose runny in morning is nothing new to me but I was diagnosed with AF 3 years ago so interesting it could be related

Thanks

My husband has runny nose in mornings. It streams constantly at breakfast table. Then he sneezes about 8 or 9 times. OK for rest of the day. On apix and bisoprolol for a/f. No probs with heat or cold except very cold hands.

Gumbie_Cat profile image
Gumbie_Cat

I think that Bisoprolol could be the culprit. I. I noticed both at first, but not so much now. I’ve never really liked the heat in summer, but I seemed to tolerate it much more the last couple of years. A bonus for me, as I can always wrap up more when it’s cold, but there’s not much you can do when it’s very hot.

Hi what medication you are on as I was told getting cold feet and flue like symptoms are side effects of beta blocked and combination with blood thinners

Hi

Since taking both Bisoprolol & Apixiban I have a clear, runny nose when I start eating! This can occur at any mealtime & can last several minutes. I have also noticed that I have a greater sensitivity to certain things.

Yes and yes,and a really painful neck which is doing my head in.

Chuyueling profile image

Yes to both for mum. Could be a combination of things but I think the AF (or the meds: bisop and edox) have a role.

HGates profile image

Yes, all year round & particularly bad when active. It’s the Bisoprolol.

BrotherThomas profile image
BrotherThomas

I also have a runny nose with clear watery fluid and difficulty keeping my hands and feet warm. Previous discussion on here says that it's down to the bisoprolol which I take with apixaban.

Ppiman profile image

I think bisoprolol, or maybe just reaching 70, has made me feel the cold more, especially in my toes!

I have read that especially in older people, all beta blockers can do this, including bisoprolol, metoprolol, carvedilol and such like.

And, yes - they can cause nasal congestion, too, I gather. Apparently there are beta receptors in many organs of the body (including the lungs, and even the brain) and, although the newer drugs are more specific to those on the heart, they do affect the other organs to some degree.

My Hubby has a constant runny nose but has no heart issues or any oral meds. He has Glaucoma, both eyes and on drops to both eyes twice daily, has been told his runny nose could be due to his eye drops.

Yes and yes. I am 78 and with permanent AF but for some time I have suffered now from constant blocked sinuses at night and lots of running nose and sneezing constantly during the day. This winter has been particularly bad and I have just about ruled out obvious allergies though we have a cat and dog and live in rural area. But I never suffered from allergies before.

This winter I can never keep warm or get warm, particularly cold feet and legs and that internal cold around the belly and chest. I don't recall that before either, and even after a 45 minute brisk walk with the dog I still don't feel warm. Our winter here has been very cold and particularly damp though, so it could just be that.

I wonder what made you ask your question

I take Diltiazem and Apixaban and have the wonky thermostat and runny nose with attacks of sneezing. I blamed the runny nose on allergies and take an antihistamine daily. I get very cold if I sit down for too long but I have found that if I put my feet up with a thick rug over them the rest of me warms up! What I need are knee high indoor fluffy boots!

I take Apixaban and Soltalol and often have a runny nose. This mostly happens when I eat and it sometime turns into a small sneezing fit. I always assumed it was related to eating, but it could be a drug reaction - I also feel the heat and the cold!

It seems it could be a side effect of bisoprolol - I've definitely had more of a runny nose since I've been on it. It's listed among the rare may affect up to 1 in a 1000 side effects as "inflammation of the lining of the nose, causing a runny nose with irritation".

Hi Anxious37 I have no idea of your age but as far as only symptom being that of a running nose.. It seems this is quite common among the geriatric community. You can research it and find this to be true.. :)

Hi

The CT scan of my head shows a cyst on my left sinus.

I put the runny nose and sneezing down to this.

I was on flixonase but I've changed to Vicks stick which is as good stopping the stuffy nose or runny nose.

NZ is summer and the privet nasty trees are in blossum.

I've recently stopped completely my beta blocker bisoprolol. No change in the sometimes cold feet.

Sometimes we blame meds but I have always had a tendency to warm my feet with sox.

I wasn't allowed to wear ankle boots/shoes to work at Dingles. Although I was the Manager's Secretary.

Always ankle boots are shoes and in o way compare with long boots.

Another item to carry along the walkway into Exeter. And I couldn't hide my sox. So no sox and had to rev up the under desk heater. But then I was subject to chillbains.

What has the world come to.

I'd get your BP checked out and then have some blood tests.

Does it help to start moving or exercising from your chair?

Have you introduced a new spice? Or have chilly in your food?
