On Monday morning I called the surgery. I got a call back with the standard response that the doctor would not over rule a recommendation from a consultant. I then rang the hospital and asked to be put through to the Colorectal department but there was no reply. I tried again later with the same result.
I then sent an email to PALS at the hospital explaining my concern. I received a very quick response saying that my email had been forwarded to the right department with a request they contact me and to let PALS know if that did not happen. I waited till 4 pm today and had no response so I emailed PALS again. I then got phone call from the lady at PALS saying she had been to the department and asked them to contact me. It worked! At 5pm I got a call to say that my concern had been put to one of the Colorectal consultants who had agreed that I should stop the Apixaban for three days instead of five.
I am much happier now and thank you all of you responded and gave me the encouragement to be persistent until I got an answer. I haven’t had an explanation as to why I was told five days but I will ask when I go for my procedure.

So glad to hear that you persisted and got an answer. But it can be very tiring when you are not well to keep on pushing. The five days down to three days does sound as though these decisions can be very random and not based on NICE guide lines.....just my opinion.
Great result. It just goes to show if you push through and are persistent doctors take action. Also using PALS was a cracking idea. I think all forum members should make use of PALS as and when needed. They can get results - as in your case. I went to them when my mother was being treated for terminal cancer and I wasn't happy with the treatment she was getting. They were very helpful.
It's worth starting a new thread about PALS to make the HUC aware of the services they offer. Do you want to do it about your experience or shall I whip one up? I'll be out for most of the day so it's likely to be later when I read your reply. It might be better coming from you as you have had a recent experience and help from them.
So pleased contacting PALS worked and you got the answer you needed. I found them to be very helpful when I contacted them and you were right to be persistent. Glad you feel happier and all the best with your procedure xx
thank you for that information. Glad you are happier
I’ve lost your original posts, but I’m having a colonoscopy on 23rd snd pre assessment op nurse phoned me yesterday and said to stop the apixaban on the morning of the procedure
I contacted PALS once and had a response from the ward..very irritated person obviously just going through the motions and didn’t like being told by PALS a they had to respond. Such differing experiences throughout the NHS.
Pleased to hear that you have been helped, but what a battle for you? Stress on top of stress. Thank goodness for PALS. You shouldn’t have had this worry. More and more we are having to take responsibility for ourselves, when it should be automatically done by the appropriate medics. You got it sorted out, but l feel for those that are more vulnerable than us and those that would have been unable to cope. Such lack of dedication and moral ethics.
