Weight gain bisop
Hi Carig, Like you I have gained weight taking Bisoprolol. I am taking 10mg a day and have taken it for a year now. Over the year I have gained a stone in weight and finding it difficult to loose. My consultant says that it isn't the medication and suggested that I should be more active. Bisoprolol makes me feel washed out and unable to exercise. Good luck with you weight loss.
First up, 3 weeks post ablation with phrenic nerve palsy(?)
Too soon to be thinking about changing medication, but Bisoprolol could well be the indirect cause of your weight gain. What is the dose?
Many, including me, do not tolerate Bisoprolol well, the usual analogy of wading through treacle is apt. I struggle with stairs on Biso 5 mgs once daily. I have put on a stone in a couple of months, and blame reduced exercise capacity secondary Biso.
In the short term, Biso will slow you down which is good. I hope you will get a sick note from your GP for at least a couple of months post ablation, your job sounds demanding both physically and psychologically. The children need you back healthy and later rather than too soon and having to go off again. Agency staff are always available. Resist any pressure to return too early, particularly from yourself 🙂
Ah thanks so much. Appreciate your reply
Hi Oyster
Just read your reply to Carig. Couldn't have put it better myself. Wading through treacle is a perfect way to explain the feeling I am experiencing. I take 10mg Bisoprolol plus Digoxin and Candersartan for BP plus Riveroxaban. Until a year ago I was a fit 63 year old working full time. Now I cannot walk upstairs and everything is an effort. I was terrified when first diagnosed with AF but now have come to accept it with the help of you guys and your supporting words.
I totally agree. Wading through treacle is exactly how I feel. I used to walk an hour a day now body refuses to walk. I too was petrified of afib but love this website. Feel we are all in same boat and have a great understanding of each other thanks for support folks
Hi Maisie1953
Can I ask why you are taking the Bisoprolol? What is the indication for it in your situation?
10mgs seems a very big dose. I wonder whether your consultant has tried taking that! 🤔Perhaps a second opinion?
I second your comment, Oyster. GP's and consultants are too trigger happy to over-dose. That's what happened to me when I was prescribed metoprolol as well as being contraindicated for vegal AF. These guys should try their prescriptions.
Yes put weight on constant battle to lose and maintain. I take at night to make me feel less lethargic. Do gym 5-6 days a week and eat sensibly. Have pacemaker that and meds keep me ticking over post open heart surgery to remove benign tumour
Thats a great idea to take bisop at night. Thanks for tip
Hi Carig, I gained a lot of weight on Bisoprolol. I was taking 10mg twice daily at first and put on a stone and a half in a year. I couldn't walk far (i'm a dog walker) without feeling I was walking through treacle and was breathless. Had other side effects too. Eventually had my bisoprolol changed to Sotalol and I lost a stone but alas, had to come off this and am now on Atenolol and Flecainide and my weight is slowly creeping up again. I am due for an ablation in the next 6 weeks so hoping I can come off meds eventually and try to loose this weight. Hope this helps.
Hi ya Icklebud same here and im a dog walker too. Poor dog has leg injury and cant walk anymore so I do no exercise really. I was so energetic before bisop. I wonder would cardiologist change me to sotalol. Really hope your next ablation is a success
In the UK, Sotalol has fallen out of favour. I believe it is only used as a rhythm control medication, and even then not very often. It is commonly used in many other countries.
I took it for 8 years for rhythm control and would prefer to go back on it than take Bisoprolol even at my current dose of 5mgs.
I can totally understand that. I wonder is there a betablocker that doesnt put weight on
I would love to know that Carig. I am on bisoprolol and have put on 6 stone in 9 years. Some of it due to osteoarthritis and 2 hip replacements but the constant weariness is depressing. I have been in SR for 2 years now after 4th ablation so hoping EP might reduce my dose when I see him in April.
Ah I hope he does barb1. Let me know how you get on
Carig
I stopped taking bisoprolol 2.5 mg due to its side effects after taking it for 2 years. Within a month I lost 3Kg (6.6 lbs) despite eating and drinking more than I normally do over the month. If you are also taking warfarin for AF I would ask my doctor whether you really need both.
Bisoprolol has such a bad press for its side effects that my GP gave no opposition to my coming off it without replacing it with another beta blocker. I feel so much better without it.
Ah thats brilliant id love to feel energetic again. Ill run it by my gp. Thanks 42 boston
