I know on Apixaban I can’t take an anti inflammatory or even the gels.
I’ve got a painful knee.
I asked in Boots about this stuff. Pharmacist said he couldn’t say.
Anyone here heard of it, used it, know it’s ok with Apixaban?
😀

Medical thinking may have changed slightly re anti-inflammatory gels and it might be a good idea to check with your GP directly.
My husband recently started Apixaban and asked his cardiologist if he could still use Piroxicam gel on his knees. He was reassured that the gel was fine as so little gets absorbed.
As I recently commented to a similar question, my doctor told me gels used sparingly were fine as so little enters the blood stream.
I take Warfarin and use Voltarol with no problems.
I have to agree with the other comments. I recently injured my ankle and my GP reassured me that the gel used sparingly was fine and so it proved to be. I am on Apixaban and Bisoporol.
hi I’ve been on Apixaban for 3 years now and I was prescribed an anti inflammatory gel recently for a back spasm and had no ill effects
I, also, have a painful knee after falling while taking my dog for a walk. I take glucosamine and chondrotin which I only started about 2 weeks ago. I had previously taken Rutin but then changed to the glucosamine and chond. I have noticed my knee is so much better. Not completely ‘normal’ but mostly pain free now. I have been on apixiban for 2 years and the glucosamine & chondroitin is compatible. Hope your knee gets better. Incidentally, you can purchase vegetarian glucosamine if allergic to shellfish (which is main derivative of ordinary glucosamine and chond.)
I don't know who told you you can't use Voltarol/ difoflenac gel but I have had it on prescription for several years for chronic back pain. I've also been on apixaban since 2017.
It is correct to say anti inflammation meds should not be taken orally,as they can interact with the anticoagulant and cause stomach or gastric bleeding.
have you tried Biofreeze , it is excellent
I agree - I’ve had the roll-on Biofreeze but imho the spray is even better. Heaps better for me than Deep Heat or Voltarol.
Post x rays to confirm the extent of arthritis at the base of my thumb joint, the orthopaedic nurse/manager guy at my surgery said these are fine for normal topical use when on Edoxaban.
As an interesting aside, if I choose to have a steroid shot further down the line to ease symptoms, it needs to be an ultra sound guided procedure due to anticoags and the small working area in that joint. Who’d have thought?
thanks everyone - the pharmacist told me I couldn’t use a gel and I’m sure it was said on here?
Great news for my knee though, I will try some!
It's surely safe, much safer than it's likely to be effective, I'd think! It gets many good reviews, though, and we are stuck with pain relief, so I am going to get a tube to try!

I can't say about Apixaban but after my HA I was told not to take anti inflammatories but I could safely use gels or ointments. I use either voltarol or Feldene Gel (Piroxicam)
I'm on apixaban and use Voltarol when necessary. I've used the high strength version for up to 2 weeks without a problem.
My pharmacist recommended Tiger Balm RED (ie without NSAIDs) but I’m sure a gel might be ok though you may have to lie to get it 😉
I'm on Apixaban and understand that gels for knee pain are fine as so little gets into the bloodstream. I've just started using Musselex which I bought on Amazon. It contains sea minerals plus menthol and so far I'm finding it very helpful - my knee pain has diminished considerably since I started using the cream only a few days ago.
Use an ice pack on the knee.
