Apixaban and joint pain
Hi Geza - I have old joint injuries in back and knee and have been taking Apixaban for 3 years without noticing any flare-ups in that time. Cold weather doesn't help or any form of physical aggravation to the original site. I find Hot/cold pads useful for odd injuries and that may help to relieve the discomfort.
No problems with Apixaban for me. Been taking it just over a year.
Thank you im glad its not the Apixaban im happy on it
Cold weather does affect me significantly even though I am having 1 hour Physio session every other week.
Also when in AF your circulation is impaired and typically in persistent loss can be 30%. In my case I was told 30% to 50% circulation loss.
Being on Apixaban too I miss being able to take anti inflammatories - ibuprofen and naproxen to settle my bad knee down. I just managed again to over exercise it whilst strenghthening it but have used an anti inflammatory gel on it. I think I was told that would be ok if I didn't do it too often or use too much. A couple of applications plus ice has helped. Heat patches help back pain too.
Thank you for the information i can cross off apixaban as the problem, cold weather and circulation seem to be the problem
Hi Geza, I'm just back from a hospital appointment at the orthopaedic dept., because over the last year I've had first a very painful swollen ankle, then wrist, then knee. Originally, my GP thought it might be gout, but it wasn't. I was sure it was because I'd been put on Warfarin. The consultant today thinks is an arthritis problem, so is sending me on to another joint expert. I don't have any previous sports injuries, and could not explain why these swollen joints occurred - nothing had happened other than my being put on an anti-coagulant. I'll be very interested to know how things progress with you, and if I get anywhere, I'll let you know.
Pat.
This is interesting. I have had gout in the past and started on Apixabin in November when my AF came back. Around Christmas I started to experience swelling around the top of the metatarsals on my left foot causing me a lot of pain. I went and saw the Nurse Practitioner at my surgery and they just said use ice and rest my foot. I assumed it was another gout attack, but I am still experiencing pain and discomfort now around the ball of my foot almost a month later. The foot remains slightly swollen as well.
Hi Geza, I've been on Apixaban for a year & have developed joint pain in my hip. I feel this is as a result of the Apixaban. Glucosamine fixed the problem instantly..... but then discovered that you should not take glucosomine whilst on Apixaban.
My joints are the same, feels as if they have got worse since taking apixaban.
I have experianced the same issues! Swollen feet, ankles. Also the top of my left foot hurts most the time. I also have gout but never experianced this til on Elliquie(apixaban) I do believe it is the med. And they all have same side effects pretty much so what the hell? Caught between a rock and a hard place as they say!!
I had severe joint pain on Rivaroxaban - I simply felt 30 years older almost overnight. Now on Apixaban and if anything it is much worse. I came off rivaroxaban last year when I was out of AF and guess what, drug free my pains completely went! these drugs are horrible
There's a similar thread in another forum and I've added my comments there:
I went to the ER with a prolonged bout of AF after several years of undiagnosed paroxysmal AF. The ER doc gave me one dose of Eliquis and sent me with a prescription which I was unable to get filled for several days due to insurance requirements. After starting the Eliquis I began to have severe muscle and joint pain in my legs which was much more noticeable at night. This included burning pain and sharp stabs of muscle pain. After a few days I had an episode of severe dizziness which lasted about half a day. When I read the information on Eliquis from the pharmacy, I decided to stop the medication until the dizziness resolved. Interestingly, the leg pain also stopped. After about 48 hours, I started the Eliquis again as recommended by the cardiologist. The pains started again. The nurse suggested stopping the statin I was on and I was reassured that leg /muscle/joint pain was not a usual side effect of Eliquis. After about a month, the pain became much less but is still not completely gone. So I am wondering if i should change anticoagulants. And I am relieved to hear that other patients have experienced joint and muscle pain from this medication, it's not just me.
