Apixaban rash

Diagnosed with DVT 4 weeks ago and prescribed Apixaban for life. This is my 3rd DVT. No problems for weeks and then a rash, very itchy, has developed on upper chest and top of arms. Occasional clusters elsewhere too.

Just looking for general comments please before seeking potential switch to warfarin which caused no problems with the previous 2 DVTs.

Thanks.

I am thinking you need a private appointment with your trusted cardiologist on the possibility of another DOAC, perhaps Edoxaban, not having those side effects before reverting to warfarin; the latter sounds attractive for you but as my cardiologist said this week the INR can bounce around depending on diet and it is a personal decision as to whether that means an unprotected risk at times.

Thanks for a reply. It will be my GP who will decide as I was discharged from the DVT Clinic at the hospital as soon as the initial high dose was reduced.

I too developed a rash a few weeks after starting apixaban. It started with itchy/burning hands & feet & then a couple of weeks later developed into hives that could spring up anywhere but mostly upper torso. Also knee pain that I’ve haven’t had before or since. I was so disappointed as I think Apixaban appears to have a good safety profile. Perhaps certain people don’t get on with the newer anticoagulants as my father developed a rash when he was changed to Edoxaban after years on Warfarin. He’s now 83 & has been back on Warfarin for the last 3 years.

Hello Falcon after six years on Warfarin my GP wanted me to change to one of the modern anticoagulant s and persuaded me with the prospect of no blood tests, not having to watch my INR levels, what I eat, and taking many tablets each time on different days. He prescribed edoxaban but that gave me awful stomach pains and then changed it to Apixaban. I've had no problems with this accept for having to take it twice a day because of its 12 hour life and I have had slight problem with itchy skin now and then. The blood test now is only once every six months and it's great not having to watch my diet. I would say it was a success for me but knowing different people react in different ways I would say give it a try and you could always go back to Warfarin if it's not suitable. Good luck😊

Thanks reinaway. It does seem a bit hit and miss but as you say, our bodies react in different ways. Good luck to you too.

l can’t tolerate any of the new anticoagulants and as a last resort had to be given Warfarin. I had awful side effects with them all, so get a change of medication.

Thanks for the reply. I hope the Warfarin is working out for you. I had no problems with it when I had 2 earlier DVTs.
