Hi,

Can't remember when I was put on it, maybe around 2008, my dose was 10mg per day taken at breakfast. I am still on it, still same dose. No side effects for me that I can think of, maybe a slight phlegmmie cough. Recommend some light reading .... the paper insert in the packet. Tells you shedloads about it. You could also go to NICE website and/or the NHS website and research it more.

hi

A cough means it is interfering with you breathing.

Is it an ACE med? As Imbrace was stoped for the side effect of cough.

Then the Beta Blocker Metoprolol made me breathless. Finally got that changed to Bisoprolol. It stopped.

Are you asmatic?

Look after yourself and make sure you tell your Dr of this side effect. 10mg is high.

Do you smoke? You don't want to develop Bronchitis or Pneumonia.

Hi Joy,

Really can't answer many of your questions. I'm always vulnerable to pollen allergy and as I live amidst farming land with much pollen and dust. All too hard to seperate side effects of medication from pollen/ dust allergy. Just live with it.

Stopped smoking ...dunno ...maybe 1985 or 1988.👍

Hi

Some of us have a tendency to an allergy. Mine proved that ACE meds I cannot take. Bisoprolol is now the best BP reducing med for AFers.

My sister gets eczma. Bad at an early age. Me nothing.

When neighbour's Iron Bark I think but in euculyptus tree flowered - full of oil I could hardly talk and my Hardie Plank cladded unit was hit by these flowers 'bombs of oil' and left stains my throat full of green stuff was suffering.

Since my stroke with AF in 2019, the CT shows I have a cyst in my left sinus. I give 1 squirt up each nostril as required.

I was also allergic to leather dyes whilst I learned to make leather goods ina night class and it became a hobby of mine.

Interesting eh! Tonsils and anenoids out aged 4 years due to very heavy and stuffed up colds.

But if you have an allergy to meds that's dangerous and 10mg high dose. Not good for your broncholi and your lungs.

I have never smoked and cannot stay around folks who smoke.

You take care.

I’ve been taking it for quite a few years, started at 2.5mg now on 10mg, no side effects for me.

I wouldn’t research it too much as there are bound to be lots of horror stories out there lol!

thanks, but a question, why is your dosage going up. My GP has started me on 1.5 but says he will put it up, why? If it works why keep on increasing, sounds as if it makes BP worse.

JudiHalf profile image
JudiHalf in reply to2learn

I was started on 2 medications at first but didn’t get on with one of them so increased Ramipril dose, probably with age BP increases, also I have put on weight which doesn’t help!

Starting a weight loss program soon…

I started on ramipril many years ago was taken 2.5mg then went upto 5mg now im on 10mg doctor put dosage up as the lower dose was not controlling my BP ,im usuming thats why your dosage is going up ,doctors put people on the low dose first to see if its suitable if not they will higher the dosage ,just too add ive had no side affects being on this medication .

Hi

Unfortunately GPs only put meds up unless one is starting a new med and starting low.

You need to go to a Heart Specialist to get any real chanes.

I struggled on Metoprolol and had rhe Dr on stroke ward permission to lower from 23.75 x 3! I said no to it in the first place when I was hospitalised with an embolic stroke due to aF caused by undiagosed thyroid cancer.

Left still uncontrolled with avg heart rate 156 but down from 186 with night pauses, the new locum put me on CCB Diltiaem 180mg AM and lowered Bisoprolol to 2.5 Night. Within days Diltiazem was reduced to 120mg (360mg top dosage).

He signed me off on 180ng with permission for the Dr to raise it in icrements to 360mg! No way.

Bingo then I was controlled.

Ramipril gave me an irritating cough which I believe is not uncommon.

My GP changed my medication to Candesartan which has been fine.

Went from 2.5, to 5.0 to 10 over several years before developing an irritating dry cough. Was then moved to an alternative.

Been taking 2.5mg daily for about 3 years. No side effects or problems.

It can give you a dry irritating cough. Known for it. So slightly antisocial these days 😀 Otherwise I didn't have issues when on it. As a voice user I preferred not to have the cough so switched to something else.

I developed a constant irritating cough after about a month. I didn't realise that it was connected at first but 3 months later it was still ongoing. A friend asked if I was on Rampril because the same thing had happened to them ! Changed medication and the cough was gone 2 weeks later.

I now know numerous people who had the same side effect

Wife developed an annoying persistent cough when put on Ramapril which severely impa Ted her sleep. GP changed her to Rivaroxaban.

Ppiman profile image
Ppiman in reply toDevonHubby1

Hi - rivaroxaban is an anticoagulant used for prophylaxis against possible blood clots caused by the AF. Ramipril is to reduce BP.

Why Rivaroxaban for BP - it's an anti - coagulant?

I’ve been on 10mg for years. They say it’s responsible for persistent cough. I take mine at night

I have taken 2.5 Ramipril for many years. A slightly irritating cough occasionally when in bed at night but nothing to concern me. Good luck with it.

Been taking 10mg ramipril for years , before breakfast. Have always suspected it of causing persistent catarrh but hard to pin down, no cough or other obvious side effects. Seen articles recommending taking at night but GP guideline sticks at morning so I just do as I'm told, habit too engrained now.

Hi I have taken 1.25mg since my MI in February much better than Amalopadine. However, do take note that you should have regular kidney function blood tests while taking it. I have dizziness on standing or lying with it, but that is better than the other medication.

My wife took it some years again. Experienced dizziness. Blood test revealed that it had caused liver damage. She was taken off it and warned never to take it again.

Hi 2learn, I've been on Ramipril 10mg for years - never noticed any side effects other than the slight "cough" that others have mentioned. Hopefully you'll be ok. Good luck and good health!

Changes in dose are not incremental. I went from 2.5mg to 10mg (maximum) in one step for minor high blood pressure.

It can cause intermittent blurry vision. Not a problem unless you are a driver and take an Esterman visual field test. DVLA are obsessive about eyesight and a problematic Esterman test can result in a revoked driving licence. As an indicator, in 2022 the DVLA produced an extended list of notifiable eye conditions for drivers. In October 2022, the DVLA had to withdraw the list as the College of Optometrists wrote an open letter stating the list contained errors and, “…a significant proportion of the healthy population with normal vision will now need to make a declaration” [to the DVLA]. As of May 2023, the DVLA are rewriting the list under advice from the advisory panel of experts.

Been on 10mg ramipril for some years, no side effects. It seems to be one of the most effective BP remedies and is tolerated by most people apart from those who get the cough.

Dropped my BP too low and gave me a persistent cough so had to stop.

I have been taking it since almost 3 years in a daily dose of 2.5mg after suffering a heart attack and three bypass surgery in 2019. It seems fine. May cause cough and phlegm but tolerable.
