Ramipril

I'm wondering if anyone uses Ramipril and how they are getting on with it. The side effects don't sound that good.

My EP tells me that the worst effects should disappear in a weeks time - but they always say that!

Also - can you have a beer when you are on it?

The only noteworthy side effect I had was a dry cough that resolved itself after a few weeks. This happened each time the dose was increased.

I was told by my GP that it did not matter when I took it but my EP was emphatic that it is best taken at night before bed.

No problems with alcohol as far as I'm aware but I don't drink much so I would not take my experience to the bank on that point.

I'm currently on 5mg ramipril, 2.5mg in the morning, 2.5mg in the evening. I've had the funny cough that Steve_ mentioned, but otherwise I haven't really noticed the difference. I would just go easy on the alcohol while you're titrating it up to the required dose and then see how you are with the odd glass.

I am on Ramipril and have been for 3 1/2 years. Was on 5 mg but has recently been increased to 7.5mg. As I understand it it helps the heart to pump more efficiently. I have the dry cough, has never gone away but put up with it. I gave up the booze when I was diagnosed with AF so donn't know the answer to that one. Not aware of any other side effects.

Looking at the side effects of every drug we take, we would never get out of bed, let alone take any of them,!! "

I got some ectopics after Ramipril, after one or two weeks it was over.

I had a dry cough that just would not go away, and swollen ankles . Was put on candastartan which suits me much better.

Pretty sure they start you on Ramipril because it's cheap

After I developed PAF, my BP was high so gradually increased Ramipril and now on max of 10mg. The cough comes and goes, but mainly at night and it is a hacking type. Feel tired of a morning but pick up by lunch time. Never been told when to take it or about a beer, I have a small lager and no problems.

Hi Ogilvie-- I was on Ramipril but had an annoying cough which was no good as I do a lot of singing. Dr changed me over to Losartan on lowest dose and the cough has gone. You may be lucky and not get a cough, but it is a very common side effect. Don't know about drinking beer---the patient leaflet should tell you if you need to avoid alcohol. There are lots of meds for H B Pressure-if one doesn't suit then there are alternatives.

Ramipril was OK at first but then I had a persistent cough which stopped as soon as I stopped taking it. Took 4 different tablets till I found one that suited me that was Ibersartan..Good Luck .

I have been on 10mg ramipril for 4 months now, no sides and I regularly have 2 or 3 beers.....all the best!!

Thank you so much to all those that responded. I have now started on 2.5mg in the full knowledge that if it dosen't work there are plenty more alternatives out there.

Thanks again.
