Cold medication

Hello, I think I may be coming down with a cold. I seldom get one and usually rely on Beecham hot lemon powders or similar. However I am now on edoxaban and Bisoprolol and I am wondering what cold medication, other than paracetamol, it is safe to take? Thanks in advance, for any advice!

Take nothing. That’s what I do. Some people take vitamin C and/or zinc and/or paracetamol. I don’t. Your cold will run its course regardless.

I only take paracetamol for any pain or temperature. Apart from that I use a saline nasal spray which helps.

I take Lemsip type medication, as I am asthmatic as well as having permanent though asymptomatic AF. If I don't treat a cold, 95% of them will become chest infections causing breathing problems with the need for antibiotics and steroids.

Paracetamol (as per instructions) and Hot water containing honey and lemon - my cure all 😊

Mine as well. x

My tried and trusted remedy since diagnosis is hot water with slices of lemon (unwaxed) and paracetamol. I wish you better soon. x

I am on Edoxaban as an anti- coagulant, plus Sotalol and atorvastatin. I have downloaded a list of drug interactions for all 3 medications from N.I.C.E. and always keep them on my i-phone. It is very useful and if ever the Doctor gives me any medication, or I get over the counter medication, you can check if it will be ok with your medication. The Doctors sometimes don’t check for interactions, so I always check for myself. You can also search for any medication that are not on the list as well.

If I’m looking at the right thing they contain phenylephrine which is a decongestant that is not good for people with heart arrhythmia. Stick to paracetamol and steaming with Olbas Oil or Vicks.

I usually take ginger, lemon & honey which I make but sometimes have the Twinings tea if I don't have fresh lemons & ginger. I also use a Propolis throat spray, which works wonders!

NO PSEUDOPHEDRINE!! That can make your heart go crazy. Guaifenesin (Mucinex) is very helpful to break up chest and nasal congestion, Oxymetazoline spray (Afrin) is good for immediate relief of nasal congestion if used as directed. These have no reported adverse interactions with the standard heart medicines.

I make up my own with hot lemon and honey and soluble paracetamol in hot water - the hot lemon and honey just makes you feel good - its the paracetamol that helps with aches and temperature. I think all the lemon drinks for colds etc are a waste of money when you can do that - sometimes I put a nip of whiskey and ginger in too - I find that works better - just a cap full of whiskey at night but I am not advocating the use of alcohol - especially on here as I know it can trigger some people's AF. Have you tested for Covid? We came dosn with cold symptoms back at the end of March and it turned out to be Covid - we tested on the Wednesday before the symptoms as we had been visiting family from abroad and we were negative on the Thursday had cold symptoms in the afternoon and tested and we were positive - called my son and his wife and they too tested positive on the Thursday. thankfully the grandson's and their Mum and Uncle didn't catch it which was good as my eldest grandson has had Covid twice - wasn't ill either time really but his Mum an Intensive Care Nurse has had it 3 times and it would mean more time off work for her - that's the reason we tested before we went to meet them and a couple of times during their stay and again afterwards. Hope it's not Covid because we were really fatigued afterwards the actual other symptoms were no worse than a heavy head cold and lasted up to 5 days but we tested positive for nearly 3 weeks before getting two negative tests in a row and continued with fatigue up until recently and my wife had labyrinthitis which caused vertigo like effects with dizziness and vomiting and tinnitus which still comes back when she does a long day's work in the garden like yesterday - luckily she was prescribed tablets and these do work.

All the best

Hi, I was told by my docs not to take any cold remedies, even lemsip which I'd always used as they interfere with blood thinners, beta blockers etc
