paracetamol

Not sure if it’s a bad cold or flu I have . I know NSAIDs are a very bad idea ( my first episode was triggered by Celebrex). Has anyone been triggered by Paracetamol ?

Are there any safe pain killers ?

Thanks

Paracetamol is fine for me. Just out of curiosity, have you considered it might be covid? Mine started as a bad cold but hoping it’s not that. Take care

Thanks . I have been so bad I have done 4 Covid tests over the last few days . I had Covid last year and this is every bit as bad but the tests were all negative

I have read that with the more recent strains of Omicron sometimes it takes longer than that after symptoms appear to test positive. I would keep testing. If you have a fever better not to take anything. Fever is the body's way to kill bugs. Paracetamol though considered a "safe" painkiller inhibits glutathione production and is not helpful to the immune system. NAC - n acetyl cysteine helps glutathione production, supports the immune system and (best of all for respiratory tract illnesses) makes mucous much more fluid so is good for coughs.

Thanks . I don’t suppose it much matters which bug it is as I have to deal with the symptoms either way . Wouldn’t dream of mixing with people when I am unwell , not well enough to go out anyway !

"We are not allowed". Allowed by whom? I have had afib since 2014 and have taken NAC since 2016. Paracetamol is not ok for anybody. It is classed as a safe pain killer but can damage the liver even at the doses deemed safe if taken long term.

Hi

Those taking an anticoagulant should not be taking NACs because they fight (anti-inflammatory) with each other. Cause of bleeding.

My best drug was ifiprofen and even 100mg worked but as it is a NAC now cant take it - on PRADAXA 110mg twice a day.

N acetyl cysteine is not an anti inflammatory painkiller . It is the form in which the amino acid L cysteine is taken. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins and are present in food. It is a precursor to glutathione and in the context of this thread a mucolytic . WebMD says in interactions section "N-acetyl cysteine might slow blood clotting. Taking N-acetyl cysteine along with medications that also slow blood clotting might increase the risk of bruising and bleeding" and that it should be used with caution by people on anticogulation. The operative word here is "might" . Mount Sinai website info on NAC gives nothing about not using it alongside an anti coagulant. Most of the literature on the role of NAC in bleeding shows that is an anti aggregant ( ie prevents platelet clumping ) . It should not be taken by people with bleeding disorders ie haemophiliacs and should not be used before major surgery. However it must be noted that in the studies done on giving it before and during surgery much higher doses were used than it is necessary to take to help a bad cough . It was also administered intravenously.

Your last sentence seems to equating it with Ibuprofen. You say the latter is a NAC. You obviously have a different understanding of the acronym . Ibuprofen is an NSAID - non steroidal anti inflammatory drug.

Hi

You replied ages ago.

I realise that I left out a letter NSAIDS.

Not allowed such as ifroprofen which my best pain killer. Just

100mg great. Especially for prevention whilst playing bowls with my

damaged knee. Fully repaired by cutting out some meniscous which didnt show on the MRI 3 years apart so I asked the sugeon to go in and look.

A wrst tear he has ever seen.

I tested negative on Sunday. Monday was positive. I also thought it was a cold, but it's not. Very unpleasant version of the thing that can't be named. See if you can get a PCR test rather than Lateral Flow? Good luck

I've had no problems with paracetamol. What medications are you on? If in doubt, read the instructions. Both on your medications and the painkiller.

I won’t take anything . Am only on Edoxaban . Never been keen on taking meds my whole life . The rare occasions I have, Celebrex, Bisoprolol I came off worst big time

I’m allergic to aspirin and asthmatic, so even before AF my choices were limited. Paracetamol has never caused me any difficulties. Have you tried the old honey and lemon, it won’t bring your temperature down but will sooth your throat and bunged up feeling. Get well soon.

Paracetamol is the only pain relief that I can take. I have a lot of joint problems and have been taking 8 a day for more than a year now, with no problems. My GP prescribes them because there are restrictions on how many you can buy at a time.

I cannot tolerate the likes of codeine, tramadol, morphine etc. and even if I could I wouldn’t take them on a regular basis because they are addictive. Obviously NSAID’s are not recommended with anticoagulants or even AF.

I have regular liver and kidney function blood tests which are all normal.

Hi

We are allowed paracetamol 2 x 500g and 4 times day.

I was given OXY Norm after my op with paracetamol.

Codeine is OK or paracetamol with codeine.\

I have taken them regularly as I also have neck and shoulder pain from polymyalgia. My afib episodes (although paroxysmal) are awful when I get them but can honestly say paracetamol has never been a trigger

I can take Paracetamol with no problem.

My sister just got over RSV and was the sickest she has ever been. She kept testing for Covid too always getting negative and finally after six days of misery felt well enough to even go to the Dr who diagnosed RSV.

Thanks for your response . Am day 13 now, very tired still coughing a bit and though mucus drying up still have squeaky ears when I blow my nose ! Was worse than Covid . Earlier , felt like I was coughing powdered glass ! It was so painful , and I pulled a muscle in my back I was coughing so much . Have a lingering headache which is why I wanted the paracetamol . Did 4 negative Covid tests . Hope your sister is feeling better . Sorry she was ill but always nice to know you aren’t alone !

Angels11 profile image
Angels11

That is exactly how she felt! She also pulled muscles in both her back and chest with all the coughing. She is three weeks out now and still has a lingering cough , especially at night, but is pretty much back to normal.

Hang in there!

Peony4575 profile image
Peony4575 in reply toAngels11

Thank you for that ! I am still still coughing a bit but it’s upper respiratory now no pain in lungs. Hopefully another week of feeling tired and washed out then but the end in sight !

I spent the last 3 weeks in agony with toothache and like you said was to scared to take painkillers. I couldn't take it anymore 3 nights ago and took paracetamol and it caused me no problems at all . Just make sure they are caffeine free paracetamol as for many afibbers caffeine can trigger and af episode ....myself included

Peony4575 profile image
Peony4575 in reply toSunnyann

So sorry you have been suffering. Toothache is awful . And yes frightened to take anything. But the overwhelming opinion is paracetamol is ok and that’s good to know !
