I have just been to the dentist and she has prescribed Amoxicillin and Co-Codamol. I take Warfarin and Bisoprolol for my Afib and wondered if any of you knew about any unsavoury interactions. I know the antibiotic affects the Warfarin and I will need an INR check in three days, but it’s the Bisoprolol and Codiene mix I’m most worried about. The dentist said she was ‘pretty sure’ they were ok together, and the pharmacist in Boots also said they were ok, but when I Googled drug interactions, I found that the Codiene DOES affect the Bisoprolol. Any thoughts, my friends ?
Bisoprolol and Codiene: I have just... - Atrial Fibrillati...
Bisoprolol and Codiene
Main problem will be with INR so if you have that covered go ahead.
Thanks Bob. I am a bit worried that the Codiene might increase the effects of the Bisoprolol - low heart rate etc, but I’ve decided to take just one Co-Codamol and one normal paracetamol and see how it goes. How are you now? Recovering well ?
Hi Tellingfibs,
I’m on bisoprolol and have taken cocodomol for pain and I’m pretty sure it’s one of the pain combinations we can take. Which site did you check on Google? If you look at the NICE guidelines and interactions with bisoprolol ( which is what the NHS medics/GPs are supposed to use) it doesn’t list codeine at all as having any interaction.
There are a few sites that come up on Google that are ambiguous when checking drug interactions and I always use the NICE one now.
Hi Teresa, thanks for that, it’s reassuring. Regarding mixing the tablets at the same time, which you queried in another post - instead of two cocodamol, I took one and one normal paracetamol. So basically, it works out as two paracetamol ( 500gms each ) one of which also has codeine in, instead of two cocodamol which have 500mgs of paracetamol each plus the codeine 😊
Hi Tellingfibs, I’ve taken co codamol whilst on bisoprolol ,prescribed by my doctor, with no ill effects.
I always check any new medication with the pharmacist and I’ve found drugs.com useful for checking any interactions.
Hope this helps !
Hi Tellingfibs,Ah yes, I deleted that additional response, (but not quick enough!) in my head I was thinking you perhaps took a double dose of cocodamol and paracetomol - I have no idea why I thought that - a moment of madness! 😳
Glad you are ok though and I hope your pain is better and settling….I always look at the NICE website though for any interactions…I don’t take any notice of the others anymore 😊
HiI had to NOT use ifroprofen. But paracetamol/codeine or codeine only OK but they are NOT inflammatory just reducing pain.
I am on Diltiazem CCB, Bisoprolol and PRADAXA (anti coagulant). It is the latter which stops me taking the above ifroprofen.
After operation in March I was given OXY-NORM... and paracetamol as it aids absorption. Remember that you can overdose on OXY and Americans die! And try to get off a.s.a.p.
A nuisance because Ifruprohen was the best and is an anti inflammatory.
CORTISONE is a contra.

Just remember the prunes and / or Senokot or Ducolax. The constipation I've had after codeine has been worse than the original pain of knee surgery.
Wife is on Bisoprolol and suffers from migraines. GP prescribed her a mix of paracetamol and codeine for her migraine so in her case Bisoprolol and codeine were OK together. Cocodamol is just a premixed combination if codeine and paracetamol so don't mix Cocodamol and paracetamol as you may accidentally exceed recommended maximum of paracetamol. Also note the codeine can be addictive so don't use for more than a few days.
I have been on Co-codamol for years daily for joint pain - prescribed by my GP and on my monthly prescription. I have taken it with biso (now on Nebivolol) with no problems and I take Rivaroxaban. You should have no problems as long at you take the recommended dose.
