Aspirin to Edoxaban

Has anyone on here had a hip replacement and prior to the op being taken off Aspirin and onto Edoxaban. I had been on Aspirin for AF for quite a few years, I was just wondering why they took me off Aspirin which I was happy with.

Aspirin for AF has not been recommended for a long time. The issue is that AF generates "Stroke" risks which aspirin doesn't control. Edoxaban does ! ( As does a range of other anticoagulants).

Many thanks, I was on aspirin for circa 6 years which just made me wonder

As said above aspirin has little benefit for stroke prevention in AF yet still has major risks of harm such as gastro intestinal bleeding. It has a place in cardiology just not treatment of AF.

I am having a hip operation next Tuesday. I must stop taking my Apixaban from Saturday evening. After the operation I will go back on the Apixaban but those who are not taking an anti-coagulant will have to give themselves injections for a few days I believe.

I've been watching the YouTube videos and think I might have gone overboard with the ice packs and stock of paracetamol. The nurse said I would have to take 8 tablets a day for ten weeks. I feel sure I won't need that many. The long shoehorn looks to be a useful buy though.

I had hip re placement in February and, being me (!), bought every aid known to man apart from a long shoe horn!Take it from me that you will need to take some painkillers to keep yourself comfortable. The most useful aid by far was a cradle device to help put on the compression stockings which have to be worn 24 hours a day for 6 weeks. I found wearing these at night and being unable to get into a comfortable position to sleep the worst part. Ice packs also very useful.

I am on warfarin and had to stop this for 5 days prior and then afterwards bridge with self administered Fragmin injections until my INR was in range .

Good luck for Tue!

Thanks, the stocking applicator is coming tomorrow! I will have to practice using it.

It was a godsend! I'm surprised that Barb 1 did not have to wear compression stockings. I've spoken to many who have all had to wear them. They are to help prevent DVT as I'm sure you know. Maybe if someone is very active different rules apply but difficult to be very active immediately post hip surgery.A good idea to practice using the device. Saves alot of bad language later !

😬😀

I've decided not to get one until I know whether I'll be wearing compression stockings or not. Can get it next day from Amazon anyway. It's very helpful to know that there is something you can buy which will assist you if you need it.

I intend to get up and move around as much as is reasonably possible. Famous last words!

Best advice is to follow physios exercise regime however simple the exercises may seem!

That"s harsh. We only had to wear the stockings during the day even in the clinic. I agree- sleeping was rough!

I had one particularly bad night when I couldn't sleep, got all hot and bothered and decided I couldn't stand the b----y stockings a moment longer. I couldn't get them off, didn't dare wake OH so I grabbed nail scissors and cut them off. In the process I managed to nick the skin on my shin. Enough said. Lesson learnt !

When I went for my 2nd post op check in April last year for the first hip my surgeon asked when I wanted the left one done. I could not bear the thought of having to wear the stockings in summer as we often get heat waves with temps up to 38° . So I said beginning of Nov. But my pain got so much worse I decided to bring it forward to late Sept. Even though I was told to wear the stockings for a month I was naughty and took them off during the day so I could sunbathe ! My husband used to put them on for me. I also used the ones I got for the first op the second time. The first time the nurse put them on she remarked how easy it was. So major cheating!

The nurse is talking nonsense. After both my hip ops I took the minimal Paracetamol while still in the clinic - sometimes just the morning dose. I took Tramadol ( which I prefer as for some reason my body dislikes Paracetamol) for the second op again one pill only in the morning. Less than a fortnight after both ops I stopped all painkillers. Some people have more pain than others . What did help enormously was the ice. In the clinic we had rubber bags filled with ice cubes wrapped in a pillow case tucked next to the wound. These were renewed regularly. At home I used the gel packs that go in the freezer. Expect to have considerable post op swelling in the leg even down to the ankle and do not be surprised if you get knee pain ( dislocating your own hip is a brutal process and often the knee gets hurt) . It took at least 6 weeks for the pain in the right knee to diminish substantially. It was worse than any pain in the hip. The left wasn't as bad and went quicker. From the moment I first walked on the new hips I could feel how much better it was . Hope it all goes well .

I must have remembered it wrongly. What she said was 8 a day for ten days not ten weeks. At the time I thought 8 x 10, I've got to get 80 tablets! Ten weeks would be 560 tablets.

I think that compression stockings are not used routinely these days. I will find out, surgery 8.30 tomorrow back in the ward for lunch.

I had no compression stockings after coming out of hospital! They said now that you are moving around it's fine

Oh well, it will be useful for putting on tights, I've got a drawer full of them.

Had THR in February. Took me off Eliquis 4 days prior, however I was in sinus rhythm throughout. Aspirin shouldn't be an issue. Good luck...mine went well.
