My cardiologist said they won’t do this before an ablation because I’m on APIXABAN. Seems a bit risky . I’ve spoken to one person who was on Apixaban but still had clots ?

Just had RF ablation. My EP does not routinely perform TOEs prior to ablation now. I had them prior to my previous 3 three though. I am on Warfarin.

Wonder when they decide to do them,

How was your ablation?

Ablation went very well. Lasted five and a half hours and had ablation for Afib, Aflutter and Atrial tachycardia. Nearly five weeks now and feeling good! ( hope I'm not speaking too soon.🤔.) I think it is probably up to your EP whether or not to proceed with TOE. I've had same EP from the beginning

I think EPs tend to have their own protocols. I have always been on Warfarin and in the bad old days had to stop five days prior. Second ablation stopped five days prior and self injected clexane. Ever since stay on warfarin throughout. I can't see how apixaban or any anticoag makes TOE any more risky to be honest.

Thanks . Understand

My experience is that a DOAC is stopped 48 hrs before and a TOE always done before an ablation (except an AV node one.) I was on Dabigatran when a clot was discovered. It was another 6 months before they could proceed..

I’m going to BARTS. Stay on Apixaban and no TOE

I was told to miss out my apixaban dose the morning of the day the op was to be done. I had the op in the afternoon, so less than 24 hours from my last dose.

Seems to be different depending on the hospital. Are you in the Uk ?

Yes, hospital was Blackpool Victoria.

As you can see, wouldn’t be practical to do it prior to ablation in your case, but it can be done as part of the procedure if considered necessary. You have to trust your EP 💜
