Magnesium?

I have been taking magnesium taurate for ectopics for some time. But I am wondering whether I should now that I am in persistent fast AF. What do folks think before I open the next bottle?!

What would your expectations of taking it be?

I think everyone reacts differently and if you haven’t had much relief from taking Mag Taurate up until now, what makes you think it will now?

Best wishes for New Year - CD

It certainly helped with the ectopics when I was in SR but yes, I don't see the point now.

I guess that as anyone who eats their greens gets all the magnesium they could ever need, so a little bit extra can't do any harm at all. It's a very safe mineral and I gather that any excess is excreted by the large bowel. A large amount will cause diarrhoea which is what makes it so useful as a laxative.

Hi! I did quite a lot of reading about it and it seems that most people don’t have enough magnesium, despite a very healthy diet!

Aha - I see. That’s good. I haven’t found that myself, except for a few scientific references. Sadly, my own searches for nutritional information on the internet turn up more hype than science although Google Scholar seems to have that solved now.

The chlorophyll in all green vegetable matter is a natural source of magnesium, which is highly absorbable; the mineral is also in the fibrous coatings of grains, nuts and similar.

Not everyone eats well, of course, so deficiencies are always possible. From what I can tell, most deficiencies of nutrients, however, are far more unusual than generally thought and when they do exist, are more down to genetics and health rather than to diet.

But magnesium is very safe, so a trial of a supplement can’t harm.

If I remember right calcium and magnesium are what help muscles expand and contract so I would continue plus it's needed for so many processes in the body

It has other benefits apart from its potential effect on AF, it's a relaxant, slightly reduces BP so worth sticking with I think , take care.

Well I would Barb1 but obviously it’s up to you! It’s interesting that you say that it helped with your ectopics... (I’m in persistent AFib too with pulse of 100-140 on average).

Barb1 in reply toSlidingdoors99

That's interesting. What is your treatment plan.?

Slidingdoors99 profile image
Slidingdoors99 in reply toBarb1

I don’t think I have one anymore! My cardioversion only lasted for 3 days before I went back into AFib. Next hospital appointment is 12th January. I have a feeling that they may try the procedure again but this time with amiodarone.

Barb1 profile image
Barb1 in reply toSlidingdoors99

Yes, my cardioversion in July was the same. I was supposed to have a 5th ablation in March, postponed to January and now that has been postponed. I am finding the breathlessness and weariness very debilitating. My EP wanted to try me with amiodarone as well but I am borderline underactive thyroid, so we decided on Flecainide instead. I have stopped taking that for now, as the procedure is not going ahead.

I see. Oh dear Barb, I’m sorry to hear that. On this site I so often see that folks need several ablations and I’ve never understood why. Do they just scar a few areas of the heart at a time?I’m still so new to all this, but I do try and read up as much as possible.

The side effects of amiodarone has been my most recent read!

Barb1 profile image
Barb1 in reply toSlidingdoors99

As I understand it, sometimes the scar tissue heals over and/or new areas start fibrillating. That's why repeats are needed.

Thank you for explaining that to me. My journey really has just begun.🥲 I’m so sorry that you’re feeling so breathless and unwell...

You should insist on being treated for your thyroid. The NHS practice of leaving people with borderline hypothyroidism untreated until their TSH rises more is a disgrace. Some of your breathlessness and wearinesss could be down to your thyroid and ameliorated with treatment.

I'll bear that in mind, thank you.

I have been prescribed digoxine have you ever had that to slow heart rate.?i did take amiodarone after heart bypass in 2013 but the only prescribed it for 3 weeks . I did not start with af until 2 years later. I see you appointment was January did you take the amiodarone and did it work?

Barb1 profile image
Barb1 in reply tograndadbren1

My ablation was cancelled due to COVID so the Flecainide was stopped. In 2 weeks it had made no difference to my heart rate.

Hello. No, I’ve never been on digoxin. It’s not good news from my end unfortunately. No second cardioversion date yet, but bloods show that the amiodarone is already effecting my thyroid and I have raised sugar levels.

To cap it all, was diagnosed with a paralysed vocal chord last week.🥲

So sorry i know that amiodarone is a toxic drug i hope you soon get your cardioversion .

I tried Mg Taurate for a while with no initial problems on one pill. When I went to two pills a day I found that after a couple of weeks that I was having frequent double beats (at NSR rate) that kept me awake at night. I posted on this excellent forum :

healthunlocked.com/afassoci...

Feedback indicated it was most likely Bigeminy, which the Pro-Op nurse confirmed when I spoke to her.

I then stopped the Mg and focussed instead on my diet (almonds, spinach etc). After two weeks, all of the double beats stopped.

So my advice is to proceed with a little caution and ensure you listen to your body

Hi this is interesting to me as having suffered with only a few difficult Afib over the years, I had two fun blown episodes within three days of each other just recently both necessitating A&E attendances. In A&E I was given magnesium on both occasions, and bisoprolol with mag on one of them. Both doctors and the resus nurse were reluctant about my taking magnesium as a supplement which I was surprised about having read such good things on this site and Dr Sanjay Gupta. My problem now is since those episodes I am plagued with what I think are ectopics. Whatever they are they are making me terribly anxious which of course does not help them I am also breathless when they happen.

I have started taking magnesium from a company called AAvalabs Premium Fullnesium (Amazon) does anyone know them? the reviews about the company and product were excellent but now I am unsure whether I should be taking magnesium or not. what is Bigeminy?

I am seeing my cardio EP on 7th January and have to make some decisions He wanted me to have an ablation a couple of years ago but I held off on both that and Bisoprolol as my episodes weren't too troublesome. Now I dont know which way to go.

apologies this is rambling a bit. I am in the middle of ectopics or whatever they are!

Happy New Year everyone

If you're quality of life is going downhill, then an ablation seems the way to go. But maybe a cardioversion first?

thanks Barbi. May I ask what magnesium you were taking and how much per day? if they helped with your ectopics I would be interested to know. As I said I am plagued with them right now and know I have to do something.
