Hi prescribed apixoban 5mg x 2 daily yesterday only to find when I got home from Doctors that if you are under 60kg to contact your Dr or pharmacy! t

They were shut by then so have not started the meds in case they are too powerful for my body weight. Waiting till Monday to contact Doctor as I know you can get them in 2.5mg.

Anyone else out there had experience of this.

Thank you

Why not ring NHS helpline for advice?. One would not want to be unprotected from stroke if possible.

Lower dose is prescribed if you have 2 or more of the following.

Under 60 kg weight.

Over 80 years old.

Renal impairment.

Hi Wee Lucy :-) as stormcloud has pointed out and N.I.C.E advise....

[quote= NICE dose of apixaban

For the prophylaxis of stroke and systemic embolism in non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF), the usual dose of apixaban is 5 mg twice a day.

Reduce the dose to 2.5 mg twice daily if the person has at least two of the following characteristics:

Age 80 years or over.

Body weight 60 kg or less.]

cks.nice.org.uk/anticoagula...

I am not medically trained and it is not for me to advise what to do but In your position rather than go unprotected I would cut the tablets in half and take a dose of 2.5 until I could speak to a doctor.

Hi Lucy

I've been prescribed Apixaban just this week as the Rivaroxaban has caused bad hair loss for me, and I am around 55-57 kilos so questioned whether I could have the lower dose, but my GP has told me that you need to have more than one of the following.

Over eighty years of age

Under 60 kgs

High Creatinine levels.

It would be good to be able to take a lower dose, but far better to have the protection of the appropriate dose.

Best wishes
