Leaking legs!

In September I was first diagnosed with Afib and enlarged left atrium. In November I was put on Cardizem, Xarelto and Aldactone. I now have severe pitting edema in both feet and legs. My doctor now suspects liver disease, which I have suspected for years.

My concern right now is my 'leaking' legs. Really! My legs are leaking clear serum. I was supposed to have an office visit with my doctor on Friday but the gal at the desk won't give me an appointment because she said doctor is doing telemed.

I don't know what to do. I don't want to go to the emergency room. I'm afraid of the virus. I'm high risk 73 year old woman.

Has anyone ever had edema so bad that the fluid starts leaking through the skin?

I think you have to push for a face to face appointment. Can you send your doc. an e mail that will not go through the practice? We can do that with our practice. Say whatever it takes bar lying.Do you have a friend to accompany you to the surgery ?There are a few things that cause leaky legs.I am not a medic but quite well read re. medical matters.I would be inclined to go to A and E. if you cannot get to see your GP.Well, that is what I would be doing.

Thank you. Yes, I just sat down to write an email to the doctor's office manager.

I'm including photos of pertinent things I need him to look at.

He will be reading my lab reports by Friday, and I intend to call the office back Thursday (today). I've been way too sick to even sit at my computer until I wrote my post.

My calfs are leaking in the back. I tried to sleep in my bed and an hour later my bedding was soaked where my lower legs rested. I can barely walk to the bathroom or kitchen.

I have to get hold of the office manager to see if she can get approval for me to go to the urgent care or get me some meds to help with my feet and legs.

Thank you again.

Thank you. Yes, I'll call asap. I've been too sick to even get back on the phone to try to get an appointment.

Perhaps you do need to visit emergency room for advice at least. Hope you get sorted asap

The emergency rooms are all busy tonight. My daughter came by to help me for a little bit. I really don't want to go to the emergency room and sit there for a long time. I'm going to call my daughter tomorrow if I don't see an improvement.

I’m so sorry that you are going through this . You most certainly must ask for an urgent appointment . Are you in UK? Could you ring 111 or go direct to A&E ?

Hi there. I had it and it was diagnosed as Lymphodeoma, I was sent to the clinic at the hospital where I was fitted for special stockings. They are a bit awkward to put on, but over time I have lost half a pint of fluid in one leg and slightly less in the other.

Shortly after I developed pitting edema in both legs, I developed a blistery rash over my lower right leg. Eventually, the blisters broke leaking fluid. Diuretics worked for me.

Funny you mention the rash. I just noticed I have a rash about 20 minutes ago. Thank you for explaining your experience with the rash!

I possibly won’t be much help, but every time the weather is hot or I go on holiday especially by plane, my legs swell up with water even though I’m on water tablets. The last time I went away they were so bad that my skin split in my legs and like you were leaking fluid. I upped my water tablets and tried to keep out of the sun and sat with my legs above my hips level. They didn’t go down and by the time we had flown home were worse.

When we got home (this was last October) I went straight to my GP who said up my water tablets. I told him I had, but he couldn’t up them any more as I only have one working kidney. He sent me straight to A & E who wrapped my legs and gave me different tablets. It took a week for me to be able to walk, but it worked thank goodness. Now I worry about warm weather and going away on holiday (whenever we can with the virus).

So you aren’t alone and I do feel for you as I know how uncomfortable and painful this can be.

My answer is though, at the hospitals there are red and green areas and despite the media it is safe to go to hospital as the Covid patients are definitely well segregated. I know the ambulances are very busy at the moment, but your quickest route would be to call them and they will take you in and save you waiting in A & E, but truly even that would be safe for you, but probably uncomfortable for your poor legs.

Please though it is important to see someone asap as you don’t want a lot of ulcers which take forever to heal.

All the best.

I was wondering why my doctor asked if I had ulcers. Thanks!!

Also although this sounds crazy to drink more water as the problem is water in the legs, but according to my GP he said they are two different type of waters and it is very important to drink as much water as you can (without drowning your kidneys of course). I’m told slightly warmed boiled water is the best, but that might be just for me as my kidney can’t take anything too cold.

Useful info, thanks! I got no help from GP when I had very bad swollen legs last year 🙁

I always have this, but you should gets yours checked out. My legs swell up because of kidney issues, and when they get to a certain point of being filled with fluid, little water bubbles appear on the skin of my calves only. They break and then weep this clear odorless fluid. It is simply the swelling from my legs not having enough room, and leaking out through these little bubble areas. Sometimes they leak for weeks before they finally dry up, sometimes they stop pretty quickly. The amount of fluid in my legs is constantly changing -- sometimes when it's not too bad, the weeping stops completely. My doc says it's just a matter of not enough room in my swollen legs to contain all the fluid buildup. BUT I do recommend that you see your dr, yours may be different. For example, if you don't have swollen legs, then yours is definitely different!

My legs are definitely swollen. The worse I've ever had. I couldn't walk this morning but now, after taking Norco and Prednisone I'm able to walk better.

Yes, I also take a Hyrdocholothiazide when my legs are really bad. But my doc says that just because my legs are swollen doesn't mean that there is also fluid in my lungs or heart. But you are good to see a dr and have him listen to your lungs and see if you have fluid there.

Take the telephone appt as that is all the receptionist can do then the doctor makes the face to face if they think it’s needed

My feet and legs swell up every day...i try to keep them up as much as possible...I take Xarelto...not sure if it's a side effect of them...It's always worse when the weather is hot.....I've told all the doctors about it and they make nothing of it!

Hmmm. I take Xarelto, too. Good thing to think about. Thanks!

Well folks, I went to the Emergency Room on the 6th. They admitted me. I was in the hospital for 5 days. I just got released today.

I can barely walk because of severe pain in my lower back/pelvis area. My legs are painful too. Both of my legs are still leaking, but the left leg is leaking like a faucet.

On the fifth, my legs were normal color, but on the 6th my left leg turned red, which is why I went to the hospital. I have 2 wounds on my left shin. They took both blood cultures and wound cultures. I have cellulitis - staph infection. I now need a home health care person to assist me at home. And I need a walker. Can't walk without lots of pain, even after my strong pain meds kick in. My legs and feet are still badly swollen.

I don't have a clue as to a prognosis. I have an office appointment with my primary care physician in 2 days. I'll keep you all posted.

And, thanks very much to all of you for all the good information. It was very, very helpful!

Next stop: home health care doctor visiting me tomorrow. Also, Monday I have to call infectious disease specialist.

I may end up in a nursing home to be given heavy doses of IV antibiotics that must be monitored.

After being out of hospital for 2 days, my legs are getting red again. Still leaking and my left arm and hand are turning purple.
