Magnesium when you are also taking Flecainide

I want to add Magnesium to my medication routine as have sleep problems since I have Restless Legs. I take Flecainide and Eliquis together at 9:am and 9:pm, can you also take magnesium with those drugs at the 9:pm dosage?

Don’t want to take too many things together if it’s bad.

Thanks

Might be a good question for your pharmacist. I know you have to separate magnesium and antacids by 2 or more hours. Always best to ask a professional or go on line snd check with a drug interaction checker

Tried to look on line but couldn’t find the answer I was looking for. May have to call my EP but he is not always helpful. His interest seems to be , use my prescribed pills and leave the OTC drugs/herbs alone

I know, same here. Most of us do take magnesium here, maybe someone else has a better answer

That's interesting. The 2 hour gap between Mg and Antiacids. I take my Mg with Lansoprozol.

I checked on the MedScape app for interactions and it shows as clear.

Thanks, my concern was it might make Flecainide less effective. I will be using Magnesium Glycinate, think only 200 mg since I weight about 100 lbs. I wanted to take it at bedtime hoping I could get some sleep then.

I take the glycinate also, no issue with bowels. It is supposed to be easily absorbed.

Many people take mg with no issues. Just be careful which one and what dose as it can cause looseness.

I take Edoxaban, Bisoprolol, Lansoprozol, Flecainide and Magnesium Taurate in the mornings and Flecainide and statins in the evening. (amongst others!) I've not had any issues, but check with your Doctor first if you're unsure.

I take magnesium taurate with flecainide with my evening meal 6pm. Then eliquis at 7pm. It was suggezted by Dr Gupta who knew what meds I take. Always best to checkwith your own doctor or pharmacist. I only take one capsule not two as recommended.

If you are concerned about too many pills by mouth, you can take Magnesium spray on the body, one I have used for years is goodhealthnaturally.com/hom... as well as a Magnesium compound by mouth in the morning.

My experience would suggest avoid taking Mg before bed as when I woke up in the night for a pee, I did not feel tired enough to go back to sleep. I have scaled that back to very little in the evening and have just started taking naturaldispensary.co.uk/pro... - it is early days but it seems to be working very well

I am also on Flecainide and Apixaban and have been taking Mag. Taurate for some time now.

The dose I take is 200mg p day which I split into 2 x 100 tablets, taking one in the morning with breakfast and one in the evening with dinner. I have found it easier to take with or just after food. As for flecainide I find I need to take it a couple of hours before or after food.

When I told my consultant I had started on Mag. he was quite pleased as he has been trying to get his mother to take it who is the same age as me!

I have found it has helped me enormously in more was than I expected. The capsule versions made me feel a bit unsettled but I now take them in tablet form which has been better for me.

Good Luck with them and I hope they help.

My cardiologist told me to take 400 mg of MagOx - which I think is elemental magnesium - twice a day. I also take Flecainide 50 and Eliquis twice a day, and a long acting Metropolol 25 once a day in the morning. I also take a multi-vitamin, vitamin D, vitamin C, and a monthly shot of vitamin B-12. That does of magnesium settles well with my system and agrees with me. After switching to a plant based diet, I weaned myself off of my Lipitor/statin and Prilosec/omeprazole last year though, so don't have to consider whether there is an issue with the two of those products interacting.

Here is what I found on line

Interactions with Medications

Several types of medications have the potential to interact with magnesium supplements or affect magnesium status. A few examples are provided below. People taking these and other medications on a regular basis should discuss their magnesium intakes with their healthcare providers.

Bisphosphonates

Magnesium-rich supplements or medications can decrease the absorption of oral bisphosphonates, such as alendronate (Fosamax®), used to treat osteoporosis [62]. Use of magnesium-rich supplements or medications and oral bisphosphonates should be separated by at least 2 hours [58].

Antibiotics

Magnesium can form insoluble complexes with tetracyclines, such as demeclocycline (Declomycin®) and doxycycline (Vibramycin®), as well as quinolone antibiotics, such as ciprofloxacin (Cipro®) and levofloxacin (Levaquin®). These antibiotics should be taken at least 2 hours before or 4–6 hours after a magnesium-containing supplement [58,63].

Diuretics

Chronic treatment with loop diuretics, such as furosemide (Lasix®) and bumetanide (Bumex®), and thiazide diuretics, such as hydrochlorothiazide (Aquazide H®) and ethacrynic acid (Edecrin®), can increase the loss of magnesium in urine and lead to magnesium depletion [64]. In contrast, potassium-sparing diuretics, such as amiloride (Midamor®) and spironolactone (Aldactone®), reduce magnesium excretion [64].

Proton pump inhibitors

Prescription proton pump inhibitor (PPI) drugs, such as esomeprazole magnesium (Nexium®) and lansoprazole (Prevacid®), when taken for prolonged periods (typically more than a year) can cause hypomagnesemia [65]. In cases that FDA reviewed, magnesium supplements often raised the low serum magnesium levels caused by PPIs. However, in 25% of the cases, supplements did not raise magnesium levels and the patients had to discontinue the PPI. FDA advises healthcare professionals to consider measuring patients’ serum magnesium levels prior to initiating long-term PPI treatment and to check magnesium levels in these patients periodically [65].

I was on Flecanide for 7-8 years and took magnesium 1000mg everyday without any problems but always confer with your health care provider when adding supplements to a medication regimen.
