Which type of Magnesium do you take? Oxide or Taurate

RiderontheStorm profile image
26 Replies

I have been taking Mag Oxide for years but recently read that may not be the correct type of Magnesium. Magnesium Taurate seems to be the specifically heart targeted type? Sorry if this has been addressed previously since magnesium is not a new subject. Just trying to differentiate which is "more" correct to take.

Apparently magnesium taurate is the best to take. Not sure why but was re commended by Dr Sanjay Gupta in one of his videos!

I bought some a while back on Amazon.....bit difficult to obtain in chemist....and have spent some weeks just looking at the container (?!) However started taking about 10 days ago and I haven't had any tachycardic episodes in this time....was getting them almost daily at one point.

Wow. That is great to read Sandra. I think I am going to change "type" of magnesium. I think I have been taking the less useful type all this time.. Did not find it on the shelves at Walmart yesterday. May have to order online.

Which make did you buy Sandra? I'm looking for one that doesn't contain a lot of bulking additives especially maltodextrin.

Hi Jean...Im taking the actual one re commended by Dr Gupta..Cardiovascular Research Ltd . States other ingredients: gelatin calcium stearate silicon dioxide cellulose croscarmellose sodium ( yikes!) I didn't start taking this until very recently as I felt a little unsure of its safety as it came from US and there was no use by date shown. However I decided it would be ok as said doc had endorsed it.

I can only say that I've had no further tachy episodes since I started taking it. ( cue now for a major episode !!) 6 months since last DCCV as well.

Thanks Sandra that sounds good. I've read of people finding these capsules a little large, which makes me wonder why they have to use any fillers in a capsule? Odd isn't it. It's Maltodextrin that I have to avoid, my heart hates it.

Jean

I wouldn't call them large....just normal size capsules . I couldn't take ' horse size ' tablets.....its bad enough swallowing normal ones !

That’s worth knowing, I’ve only had one attack, years ago, that I forgot about, and then again this Wednesday 4 th March. I will look for it.

Hi Jean I recently messaged Dr Sanjay Gupta regarding taking Magnesium because I have slightly compromised kidneys And know you have to be careful with Magnesium, he suggested I could try Magnesium body oil which does not go through the liver. Further research led me to buy a make called Ancient Minerals which is quite a pure form and cost £20 a bottle. Prior to using I was having attacks of A F three times a week . Have used this for ten days and no attacks to date ( hope I am not tempting fate) .. I am quite impressed and thought you might be interested to know of this alternative method of taking Magnesium .

That's kind of you to think of me. I've used a magnesium oil from H&B, but it hasn't made any improvement that I've noticed. I've made a note of the one you use and will certainly give it a try. Am pleased it's helped you, quite amazing that it seems to have cured your AF. I'm going to spray some of mine in now that you've reminded me. Will certainly try the Ancient Minerals one. Thank you. Jean

Try magnesium bisgycinate - which is chelated form. Magnesium oxide very low absorption rate. Citrate form is quite good. Too much magnesium will be flushed out by the body through the bowel

I don’t take either of those. I take magnesium citrate (800mg)and a separate taurine supplement.

I thought Magnesium Citrate was a powerful laxative? Not something to be taken regularly......

Not a very powerful laxative in low doses especially when taken with food at night. Varies with the individual. You start slowly, and increase the dose. I take 400mg. This is what I used to take when I had cramp at night. The citrate form is well absorbed, and is not expensive. I find swallowing difficult, so I eat the capsules.

Me too, not sure if thats as good. I remember Dr Gumpta saying the one he gets is activated or something or other, but at £39 bit expensive for me.

Just had 2 days of AF so not working that well for me.

If you google the brand Dr Gupta suggests you can find it cheaper ( not cheap) elsewhere. I use magnesium sprayon joints ( kills 2 birds one stone!!)

in reply toshorttail

I agree that this is a bit pricey especially if you don't know whether it will work for you. I've just looked back and seen that when I bought mine in April it was £29 so they have now hiked the price up by £10....i wonder why?

Hi RiderontheStorm , I take Mag Taurate and it works brilliantly for me. I eat loads of veg of all sorts and nuts and seeds and fish and thought I would be getting enough magnesium from my diet but within 20mins of taking the first tablet my PAC's reduced significantly and 2 months later are still so much better than they were.

Good luck!

Indira :)

I take 400mg daily of Swanson's magnesium taurate which I buy online - 2 tablets in the morning and 2 tablets before bed. Works very well for me.

I've been taking mag taurate for more than a year and it seems to have calmed my heart considerably. My AF episodes are much less worrying. My EP has also recommended magnesium malate and I started taking it as well about six months ago -- no noticeable difference for me. I'm going to stick with mag taurate ordered from Cardiovascular Research.

I enquired about taking a Magnesium supplement of some sort, first my doctor and then my pharmacist. The reply was an absolute NO, because of other medication that I have to take. It would upset the balance of what I am on for five or six medical problems. So I would say it depends on your overall medical problem. I'm no medic, but just saying.

In another video (whether made before or after the Magnesium Taurate one, I don't know) Dr. Gupta recommends Magnesium Pidolate. Has anyone tried the Mag Pidolate ? Perhaps someone who has been in this AF community longer than I have, knows more about the history of these two Gupta recommendations?
