Riveroxaban & immune boosting supplements

Rivaroxaban - My Father is taking this drug as a blood thinner as he had a blood clot a few years back . He is 74 years old

I (his daughter) want to boost his immune system naturally given the current Coronavirus situation. I am concerned that certain things will interact with his medication , I have been googling and not really finding mixed answers

I am looking at things like Probiotics , strong vitamin C supplements , vitamin D3 or D2 supplements , Zinc, Echinacea, Elderberry extract, Oregano oil,

Spirulina , Blueberry extract ( antioxidants )

well these are all immune boosting things that I take to be super healthy - but not sure if my dad can take them ... now is a crucial time to look at strengthening your immune system - might save a life in our coronadays

I take Rivaroxaban and have taken Spirulina, Vitamin C, D3, Popeye Spinach, Probiotics like Bio K+, Zinc, Echinacea etc. etc and have never suffered any reactions.

Thank you so much , I have lots of Spirulina - and we are going to increase the spinach and kale in our diets ) I live on all that stuff in califoria but it’s new to my parents) I have echinacea but I really was not so sure about this . We started drinking green teas also taking blueberries extract .

Your Dad is a very lucky man to have such caring daughter. I think the safest thing to do is to make a comprehensive list of what you are proposing to provide your Dad and then run through the list with your pharmacist. You could also consider emailing the same information to the Pharmaceutical Company and ask for their opinion and advice......good luck.

The only thing that really reacts with Rivarobaxan is grapefruit. It’s the least problematic anticoagulant. I take 3-4 1000 mg of vitamin C daily and see no change and no extra bleeding. Same with echinacea and zinc. This is a personal view obviously but I’ve done this for years and no side-effects.

Great to know - thankyou

I take D3 prescribed by doc and Apixaban. No problem . Don't bother with D2 - it is not as effective as D3. With other things you need to find out if they have anti coagulant or anti aggregant effects that would add to the Rivaroxaban. I think oregano oil might. It is not a good idea to take oregano oil long term as it is a natural antibiotic and too much can disturb the microbiome. Oregano as a herb in cooking is ok.

Ok - great - I am taking oregano but have not allowed my father to take anything until I figure out any possible reaction to his medication - thankyou

Taking D3 is the best thing one can do in these perilous times to boost the immune system. Studies have shown that those with a level above 75nmol/l have x7 less chance of catching flu and other respiratory viruses. Why this info is not more widely bruited about is criminal. I read an anecdote years ago on vitamindwiki -a site devoted to vit d research about an American doctor who got all his patients up to very high levels of vit d. He had to retire as patient visits for all illnesses dropped by three quarters .

Yes I hundred percent agree with you - vitamin D is so important, here in the UK we can be certainly lacking in D3 in our bodies because of less of sunshine - and especially for the elders thankyou so much

I apologize for the ridiculously long reply, my GP knows I am taking all this and he is quite happy with it, So bearing that in mind it doesn't seem to me that anything will cause complications with Rivaroxaban whatsoever.

However, Grapefruit or Grapefruit juice is definitely NOT recommended under ANY circumstances. :-))

I sincerely hope this helps to put your mind at rest

Also an update on elderberry I read that there is some dispute on if it’s good to take particularly with C virus - even though it’s sold out all Most online stores because the majority of people say it’s good idea some are now saying it might be risky - I’ll try to post the article I just read
