Lose weight for ablasion?

Fingers crossed I get a cardio version done in November and it works because at my check up to get medication right the arythmia nurse said if it doesn’t work I’d have ablasion however I’d need to lose weight or they will not do it. Anyone else been turned down because they are overweight.

I’m trying to lose by going out walking watch what I eat and may try swimming been told don’t overdo it but I think it’s going to take a long time 😟

There is ample evidence that weight loss leading to a BMI of 25 or less can in many patients remove the need for ablation.(note t not s) In fact as you note, many EPs will suggest weight loss first as it is also pretty clear that failure to follow the advice may well negate any benefit from the ablation.

From my own experience diets are a waste of time as weight loss requires a change in mind set and life style. Whilst exercise is no doubt important smaller meals work.I If energy in exceeds energy out weight gain follows. It may sound silly but try buying smaller plates!

There is also ample evidence that a reduction in meat content and processed foods and a move to a more plant based diet also has beneficial results on AF burden.

Sadly I have also found that no amount of weight loss seems to change my basic body shape and although my waist measurment has dropped 2 inches the effect on other things had been more apparent to the extent that my wedding ring now flies off if I shake my hand or wave my arm about too hard!

Good luck!

While portion control is easy in theory, it’s no good if you’re left hungry. Also you need to maintain stable blood sugar as you have a physical job. I find the current Weightwatchers plan excellent, easy to follow. If you eat a diet including veg fish chicken fruit eggs you’re half way there.

Hi Janelr, i was just under 21 stone through my ablation but lost almost half a stone since ablation, so i dont know how overweight you have to be for them to refuse ablation

Hi I stopped smoking and put on one and half stone so decided to go for it. I joined slimming world and to be honest I don’t feel like I have been on a diet. I have lost 11 pounds in 11 weeks so not far to go.

Yeah think that’s one I’m going to follow , got a date for cardio version for end of November so anything that come off till then will be a bonus . Well done that’s a fab weight loss. Think when I get back to work that will help as it’s a physical job.
