Ablation works well for some people but must be considered part of ongoing treatment. The earlier done the better usually but don't expect it to be an instant thing. It takes three to six months for the heart to fully heal and you will likely have some oddities in that time. One must also consider that it may well need repeating (mine took three goes but basically AF free last ten years.) Many people do find that whilst their AF may be terminated they do still continue to suffer from periods of ectopic activity and also occasional tachycardia (fast heart beat) but are great full that the debilitating AF is gone.

Hope that helps

Like you I had PAF for 15 years with few episodes but then had a cluster of bad ones. My ablation worked well, I take no meds and though I have had a couple of episodes they haven't been bad or lasted long.

There is quite a lot of evidence from several studies, but not definitive proof, that successful ablation reduces your stroke risk to what it would have been without AF. Nowadays the procedure is much safer, but NEEDS TO BE DONE BY A VERY EXPERIENCED EP. The EP should carry out 100 ablations per year, and have a minimum of 1000 under his/her belt. If yours does not fit these requirements I should look for another EP. I guess you are in the UK (Americans call it Afib) if so you can usually decide who you want to do it in the NHS using 'Choose and Book'. Depending on area people on this forum can often help chose the EP. I live in the Chilterns, but chose to go into London for a top EP. My ablation has been successful so far, but only 3 months in.

Good luck.
