Hi everyone. Can any one recommend an antidepressant that can be prescribed when you have SVT/Af where they won’t make it worse ? My Gp reluctant to prescribe anything other then Prozac which is ironic as when I was on it before my episodes were ore frequent ! Thanks everyone.

My GP prescribed Amitriptyline when I was suffering from anxiety and lack of sleep, I noticed that it is classified as an antidepressant but a low dose was enough to help me.

I take 10mg of Amitriptyline at night, initially prescribed for postherpetic neuralgia and my sleep specialist recommended staying on it as it helps me sleep well. My EP said it’s a very low dose so is fine. My understanding is when it is prescribed for depression it’s given in 50 - 100mg doses, sometimes more.

I was on the higher dose for several years and it caused the AF -- they didn't seem to know about that then. Now I am only allowed Venlafaxine slow release which makes me sleepy all the time.

I am on Citalopram. Don't seem to have any problems with it but I think we can get so used to feeling how we do that we forget what 'normal feels like!! It doesn't seem to have affected my AF though. I am also on Bisoprolol.

Prozac like many meds contains fluorine. This is one of the most poisonous elements on earth and in my opinion has no business in any medicine. It enables greater penetration of the active ingedient into body tissues and I have read ( though I don't know if it is true) that it enables manufacturers to use less of the active ingredient t thus saving money.

I have been on 50mg Sertraline for about 4 years. A pharmacist researched which one was safest for me. I have a cardiomyopathy, heart failure and PAF. I would say it’s been neutral as far as it’s affect on my PAF, but it does relieve my depression and anxiety.

Citalopram seems to be a favourite, but I'm tapering off of it as I don't like the side effects. That said, my body either tolerates a medication well or not at all.

I hope your GP has caught up since you posted this! I was briefly prescribed Prozac years ago, when it was new, and it caused a heart episode. This was a long time before I had AF.

Actually I think after year’s of being on antidepressants, I am sure that is what brought about my AF! I am no doctor but I have been off antidepressants for almost six months now and to date 🤞I am ok. I do have to say that coming off these drugs it has been horrendous! After so many year’s being on them, your body has to completely readjust itself again and this has been no picnic. They say even with careful tapering off the medication, plus the symptoms stated after a few weeks, this is not the case. I still have episodes when I experience the awful withdrawal symptoms and have been told this may continue for a long time. I am not downing these drugs as the benefits (short term) out way the negative at the time of most need, but I now know that staying on them is not the answer! I hate to sound so negative, but look upon them as a short term answer, not for ever.
