Having arranged an echocardiogram on Tuesday for 2.30 pm I got there to find the appointment had been changed to 3.15. No problem - off to the café for a leisurely decaff.
In due course my wife and I wandered back just in time to hear my appointment being called. I didn't even have time to sit down. So in I went, hopped on the bench, got wired up. No problems.
After I came out my wife said "Did you hear the gasps as you walked straight in " ?
'No,', I said
My wife replied ' the entire waiting area was gasping, huffing and puffing - I thought they were going to lynch me. I explained we had in fact been waiting elsewhere.'
They weren't entirely convinced until she said " You thought that we were in the know"? Laughter all round and all back to normal.

On Thursday I had to have my three monthly PSA blood test at the hospital so arrived nice and early and took my ticket (they use queuing ticket system. Sitting reading I heard my number called "Number 6" I replied in my best Patrick McGoohan voice "I am not a number I am a free man " Don't think too many in the waiting room were old enough to remember The Prisoner! Completely wasted.
Yes Bob unfortunately we all get older but not to worry, just tell them that you will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed, or numbered! Your life is my own!
Human nature is a strange beast! What I can't fathom out is why the majority of people in a full waiting room have to turn their heads and look as soon as someone enters the room?
I find that so damn strange; I avoid looking at someone entering the room at all costs, unless it's the person calling me into the consulting room - it's not only odd but rude!
But it's so boring sat waiting for an appointment, what else is there to do but look at who comes in. It breaks the monotony. Of course it would be rude to stare but a quick glance and a smile if they look your way surely doesn't offend.
It's generally fidgety people; nervousness; lack of self control; loneliness; yes, boredom; territorial; judgemental; addictions especially from watching too much unreal TV situations (soap operas etc...) and probably a whole list of other psychological reasons why people have to stop what they're doing just to gawp at someone else. I obviously do it but not in an incommodious situation. Often being overly nice, friendly and empathetic is often a weakness seen in the eyes of a leader, but is also a good thing too in the right called for situation!
