Drinking and Eliquis

My doctor says don't so I cheat. I like Vodka and Tonic with dinner. I place 4 0lives in a short cocktail glass ( can you tell I like Olives in my drinks) add 3 ice cubes and 1 bottle cap of vodka and top it off with Tonic water. That's it. Gives me just enough taste to satisfy my needs and doesn't bother me. I have one drink ever evening with dinner and that's it. It satisfies me with no problems.

Testing

Awful lot of salt in 4 olives unless you are cutting back elsewhere.

I have a gin and tonic if I feel like it ( only one) or a glass of wine. I've never been told not to drink. When on warfarin my GP said it was ok and it isn't a trigger for me. I can go a couple of weeks without alcohol. Never more than one in a day mind you. OH on warfarin has cut down a lot but still in spite of my protestations has 3 pints on a Friday night and the odd pint at home during the week. Have explained better to have same amount spread out but to no avail!!

In my case I suspect refined sugar more of an issue.

I am not sure whether or not the doctor said no drink (alcohol) because of the Eliquis or the AF? In moderation, my Doctor says no problem and I haven’t come across anyone who disagrees. For many people alcohol does trigger AF - my tipple was whiskey (the Irish way) but even a sniff of it would trigger a very symptomatic episode and I found the only alcoholic drink that didnt affect me was Champagne. Nowadays I am ok on a very small amount of most wines and fortified wine and I love mead, but I haven’t tried whiskey for 10 years so the bottles people continue to gift me go as raffle prizes or gather dust in the cupboard.

Certainly sounds a sensible way of moderating intake - a little bit of what you fancy.......

While having a quick google of apixaban and alcohol I came across a truncated snippet ".....sex during anticoagulation with apixaban" Hmm I thought sounds interesting although the S word is not used in our home these days!!. Alas it turned out to be "Clinical outcomes in patients with atrial fibrillation according to sex during anticoagulation"

Cheers!

I have a beer if I go out or a wine, no probs it seems.......I’d love to throw caution to the wind but those days are over, I’m too scared . But nice to have a drink or two I must admit,

I allow myself a whole glass of wine in a restaurant but only half a glass with dinner at home. If we order a half bottle it is unusual to finish it!

My EP said alcohol in moderation was okay (Sailor Jerry's rum in my case), and I choose to believe him. Hasn't been any kind of trigger for me. (And my anticoagulant is Eliquis/apixaban.)

Sounds very sensible to me. I like a few ounces of wine once or twice a week with dinner. Doesn't bother my AF. Cheers to moderation!

Not wishing to be preachy but a couple of things to consider when drinking alcohol while taking an anticoagulant,

...firstly you are more likely to have a fall something to be avoided because of hitting your head and having a bleed,

...secondly many AFers who take anticoagulants also take beta blockers which lower the blood pressure , alcohol can lower the blood pressure too increasing the risk of dizziness/fainting/ a fall.

I love wine but gave up alchohol when diagnosed with P-AF, a sad decision but I prefer to err on the side of caution .

I don't miss it now :-)
